*On the second Sunday in March clocks are set ahead one hour at 2am, which becomes 3am.

*On the first Sunday in November clocks are set back one hour at 2am which becomes 1am.

These dates have been set by congress in the energy policy act of 2005.

*Hawaii and most of Arizona do not use Daylight Savings Time.

Daylight savings time has a long history and it has been put into use on and off since 1918. In 1883 standard time zones was instituted in the US and Canada by the railroads but it was not put into law until 1918. Daylight Savings Time was included in that law of 1918, but appealed the next year and stopped. The time zones remained in the law.

It was put back into law in February 1942 and remained a law until September of 1945. After this time the individual states decided if they would use Daylight Savings Time or not. Some of the states did and some did not.

The Uniform act of 1966 provided standard dates for the beginning and ending of Daylight Savings Time with in the year's calendar. At this time it was to begin the on the last Sunday in April and end on the last Sunday in October. It allowed state government exemptions from this.

Then came the "energy crisis" years of the 70's and in 1974 Daylight Savings Time began on January 6 and in 1975, it's start date was February 23. After those two years it reverted back to the last Sunday in April.

In 1986 a law was passed that shifted the start date once again and starting in 1987 Daylight Savings Time started on the first Sunday in April.

The Energy Policy of 2005 changed the dates to what they are now.

Day light time saving must be eliminated/removed from the calender. What benefit do we get? Seriously.

Yeah...it's "Daylight Saving Time", not "Daylight Savings Time."

It's time to wash the car, so it's "Car washing time", not "car washings time."

Similarly, it's time to save daylight, so it's "Daylight Saving Time", not "Daylight Savings Time."

Seems like every year, we expect some people to forget to make the change and show up either late or early to work by an hour... But I can't recall it ever actually happening!

Roz, did ya forget according to the Maya the world ends in 2012? Tighten up woman!

  • Rachel de Carlos 10/23/2009

I always forget and rely on someone like you to tell me when to change my clocks! What a pain. Maybe I should move to AZ! :)

Living in Arizona, we also do not have daylight saving time here.

So interesting. Here in Australia, we have no daylight saving in the state of Queensland where I live. There is always a push to have it here - at least in the South-East of Q. It is a constant hassle to keep up with the southern states and even worse when we take account of time differences in SA and WA.

Good info. I travel between CA and CO and NEVER know what time it is in AZ.
