Days 5 and 6 - 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia
To Date, Americans Athletes Have Won a Total of 14 Olympic Medals
Day 6 - Ladies' Downhill Race - Lindsey Vonn's bruised right shin proved to be no hindrance in the Ladies' Downhill race on Day 6 as she won the Gold Medal by reaching the finish line in 1 minute and 44.19 seconds. The 25-year-old grew up in Minnesota and was married in 2007 to Thoms Vonn, a 2002 Olympian who is also her coach.
American Julia Mancuso took the Silver Medal by finishing 0.56 seconds behind Lindsey. Julia already has a Gold Medal for the giant slalom which she took home in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. She had had a lackluster career since that time, so her Silver Medal was a pleasant surprise for team USA.
Elizabeth Goergl from Austria won the Bronze Medal.
It is only the third time that two Americans have finished first and second in an Olympic Alpine race and the first time in 26 years. No American woman has ever won the Gold in the Olympic downhill race prior to this day.
Speed Skating - Men's 1000 Meter Race - Shani Davis, son of a single mother, from Chicago, Illinois, the Gold Medal winner, has thus won back to back Gold Medals in the Men's 1000 meter race. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, Shani became the first black athlete to win a Gold Medal in an individual Winter Sports game, and the fifth black Winter Olympics medalist. In Turin, he also won the Silver Medal in the 1500 meter race.
MO Tae-Bum, a 21-year old speedskater from Korea won the Silver Medal in the Men's 1000 meter Speed Skating race, finishing 0.18 seconds later than Shani Davis.
American Chad Hedrick from Texas won the Bronze Medal in the same race. In the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Hedrick became the third American to win three medals in a single Winter Olympics.
Men's Snowboard Halfpipe Finals - This event took place on Cypress Mountain with the full expectation that Shaun White would bring home the Gold Medal. His latest trick which he calls the double McTwist 1260 is now part of his repertoire and his competitors concede that they cannot duplicate the stunt. Shaun did not disappoint the fans, and performed his double McTwist 1260 on his second run. An unbelievable feat.
Peetu Piiroinen, 22 years old from Finland, has been competing since 1997. He won the Silver Medal in the Halfpipe Finals although his score was almost 10 points below that of Shaun White.
American Scotty Lago, 22 years old from Seabrook, New Hampshire brought home the Bronze Medal for team USA bringing the total USA medal count to 14.
The United States is now in first place with their medal count of 14. Five Gold, three Silver and six Bronze Medals have been presented to American athletes.
