Days of Our Lives: is Nicholas Alamain Back? or is Days Casting a New Philip?

Recently TV Guide announced that Days of Our Lives was casting for "A 30-40 gorgeous businessman with an edge, named Fletcher. He is sexy, mysterious and savvy, has an easy way with the ladies but can be formidable if crossed."

The role is for a series regular, sparking speculation that "Fletcher" may actually be a re-cast for the character of Philip Kiriakis , since his portrayer, Jay Kenneth Johnson, announced last month that he would be leaving Days Of Our Lives.

Given also that Philip, recently became a father, and is suffering marital discord with his pregnant wife, Melanie, re-casting the fan favorite character seemed a certainty.

Today, however, Soap.com is reporting that Days of Our Lives is bringing back Nicholas Alamain, who also fits the "Fletcher" profile. It is also reported that the role will not be portrayed by previous actors who held the role, and will be recast.

So is "Fletcher" a new Philip? Or is Nicholas Alamain returning to take the helm at Alamain International?

Nicholas Alamain

Nicholas "Nikki" Alamain is the love-child of Carly Manning and Laurence Alamain, who Carly believed had died shortly after birth, thanks to Vivian Alamain, Laurence's aunt. Vivian then proceeded to raise the child as her adopted son.

Nicholas left Salem with Carly and Laurence in 1993 at about age 9, but returned in 1999, as an all grown up hunky businessman, who had an affair with Kate Roberts while she was married to Victor Kiriakis. Victor was impotent as a result of a stroke, and though still in love with her husband, poor Kate had needs! Nicholas, however, fell for Kate, and left town when she refused to divorce Victor to be with him.

Re-introducing Nicholas Alamain into the Salem tapestry allows for some wonderful storylines and conflict. Melanie will suddenly have an older brother; Kate could have a new suitor. Carly will have two children in Salem to angst about, which will make up for the fact that she can't hook a Salem bachelor. And Vivian, well who knows what their relationship would be like!

Since Carly's return to Days of Our Lives last year, she has also mentioned that she and Nicholas are not speaking; presumably because Carly murdered his father.

Watch for Nicholas Alamain's potential return to Days Of Our Lives. Days Of Our Lives screens on NBC at 1pm in most markets.
