Days Out from Philadelphia

Philadelphia is an excellent base for touring the East Coast of the US, with road and rail links to New York, Baltimore and Washington DC. The city lies in the south east corner of Pennsylvania within easy reach of the states of New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.

There is a wide choice of days out from Philadelphia ranging from the glamor and glitz of Atlantic City to experiencing the tranquil Amish way of life in Lancaster County. History buffs can visit the site of the Gettysburg Address and shoppers are spoilt for choice between the country's second biggest shopping mall at the King of Prussia and crossing the state line into Delaware for the benefits of tax-free shopping. Gettysburg

The Gettysburg National Military Park stands on the site of the largest battle of the Civil War. 51000 soldiers were killed or injured in the three day battle in early July 1863 and 16 sites of historical significance are linked by a self guided tour of 18 miles. The trip takes approximately 3 hours and Gettysburg is about a 2.5 hour drive from Philadelphia.

Atlantic City

The Las Vegas of the East Coast where casinos, amusement arcades and shops line the broadwalk, providing a distraction from the beach and sea. Atlantic City is just over an hour's drive from Philadelphia, New Jersey Transit's Atlantic City Line runs from Philadelphia's 30th Street station approximately every 2 hours.

Valley Forge and King of Prussia

Valley Forge is where George Washington and his forces retreated to for the winter of 1777-78. Tour the 8.7 mile trail, starting at the Valley Forge National Park Visitor Center. This passes 10 points of historical interest, including George Washington's restored headquarters and the Washington Memorial Chapel.
After this history trip, visit the nearby King of Prussia Mall (the second largest shopping mall in the US) for a rapid return to the reality of the 21st century.

Lancaster County and Amish Country

You can experience living history with a difference in Amish country. Watch the locals go about their everyday lives, without the trappings of modern day living. Simple dress, traditional farming methods, close family bonds and devout religious beliefs are the cornerstones of Amish society.
Go to Strasburg and visit the Amish Museum, or take a ride on the Strasburg railroad. Explore the towns and villages of Lancaster, Paradise or Bird in Hand. Remember that the Amish people are going about their everyday lives and are not role players, please treat them with the due respect.
