Then one night, she heard a crack in the distance. Someone else was out there and it annoyed her for a moment but she knew that they would soon take a rest & return to the daylight trail. They always did.
The next night, she heard the footsteps again and this time they were closer. Who was this daywalker that dared intrude on her journey?
"They will leave by tomorrow. They will tire out."
For the next couple of nights, the sounds came closer and closer. She was scared because she wasn't used to sharing the trail. Why couldn't they just go back to the daylight trail with the others & leave her be?
"I will not leave you" he whispered one night.
"Yes you will. You don't belong here. Go back to the day."
"But you are my sun, don't you see that? Wherever you are is my day."
She didn't believe him and kept pushing. She repeated the same words & same attacks over and over again and he always replied relentlessly in the dark. He would go away, she would make sure of it.
One night, there was a light in the distance.
"I have not walked for long," she thought to herself. "Day can't be here yet. It can't be my time to rest."
As she drew closer to the light, she realized that the light was him.
They walked together, providing each other with the true light so many daywalkers did not see. Their light for each other was genuine because it came from their heart.
Then one night, she was in the dark again. She reached out in to the night. She rubbed her eyes. She called out for him but he was nowhere to be found. She was in the dark again, by herself & she wondered if it was all a dream.
Was he ever really there with her?
"There has to be a reason," she thought to herself. She decided to walk with the daywalkers to look for him. He was not there.
"Is he stuck in the dark by himself?"
She talked to a daywalker & found out that he is in a place where he can't reach her. She can't give him light and that scared her.
"Are you stuck in the dark with no light? Keep me in your heart as I do you & your trail will be bright. Find me when they let you go. Come find your light. I will be waiting in the dark for you because you are my sun that rises in the west. Come find me & end this eclipse of your absence. I am here. Hold me close to your heart so that you are not in the dark."
Could he hear her?
She knelt down on the ground in the dark & soothed her aching heart. She would not continue to walk until he found her. This journey would be meaningless without him.
Two daywalkers in the night belonged together, no matter the distance. She had found her mate and would not falter during a test of patience & faith.
