Dead Rising 2 for Playstation 3 Video Game Review

Dead Rising 2 Hits the Mark on Zombie Destroying Mayhem!

J G Hodnette
There is nothing quite like the satisfaction of killing zombies. After all, they aren't human. The makers of Dead Rising 2 take this thought to heart with their zombie-slaying action-RPG for the Playstation 3. One of the great innovations includes being able to synthesize your own special weapons out of things you find in the game. These are not only amazingly fun, but also often amusing--like the bucket and power tool being combined to make a zombie head-drilling weapon.

Plot

In Dead Rising 2, five years has passed since the events of Dead Rising Chuck Greene, a former motocross champion takes part in a gameshow called Terror is Reality in which contestants kill zombies. Chuck is doing this so that he can win some money to pay for Zombrex, a drug that will keep his bitten daughter from turning into a zombie as long as she keeps taking it. This will continue to motivate his actions throughout the plot. Chuck meets Rebecca Chang, a reporter for Channel 6 News and together they begin to unravel the crime and happenings of the town.

Gameplay

What makes a game like this fun is, in simple terms, the mayhem. There is nothing quite like fresh zombies in the morning and this game throws plenty of them at you with lots of force. The game includes literally hundreds of weapons that can be combined with one another to make so many different ways to kill a zombie that your head will spin. The pacing of the game is much improved over the last version, but load screens still tend to pop up when you least expect them and put you in a bad mood for minutes afterward.

Another problem with this game that the original shared is the time limit. You have 72 hours to beat the game (with a clock that runs much faster than normal time) and this time limit can often be more stressful than it is worth. Sometimes you may just want to have a little fun--gaming shouldn't be timed, right?

Also included is an online mode where 4 players play the gameshow from the beginning of the game. These minigames are a fun way to blow off some steam when zombie killing just gets a little too tedious. Playing also wins you money that you can use in the real game to buy important and awesome items. Ah, capitalism! This game is a great way to spend a day, but it's not quite as perfect as it might be. Reviewers give it an 8/10.

The game sounds interesting but can't they find a nicer name than Dead Rising?
