"Dead Space 2" Review: Authentic Survivor Horror Meets Sci-Fi
A Closer Look at This Popular Xbox 360 Video Game
From the opening scenes of "Dead Space 2," players aren't spared from the nightmarish world of Isaac Clarke. The video game begins with Clarke in a straight jacket, fleeing through the medical ward of the ship, while insect-like monstrosities dubbed Necromorphs attack from all angles and shadowy corners. Without a conventional weapon, all Clarke can do is run-and even that doesn't prevent him from dodging an untimely death, provided players are quick on the draw. The nightmare-like hallucinations he begins having of his lost love are truly unsettling, especially as a symptom of his seemingly deteriorating health.
With the ship quite infested with a vast array of disturbing monsters, "Dead Space 2" provides Clarke with plenty of motivation to get out of Dodge. And with an ESRB rating of Mature, adult gamers can definitely expect some gore, chaos and anguish.
"Dead Space 2" Pros:
The best element of "Dead Space 2" is simple: This video game completely succeeds at being creepy as hell. If you're looking for true Survival Horror, you need not look any further, especially if you are at least somewhat fond of a Sci-Fi theme. Dim the lights, turn on the surround sound, and let this epic sequel transport you into the truly disturbing world of Isaac Clarke. His internal struggle is far more interesting than the point-A-to-point-B linear storyline itself, and his moments of madness are as compelling as they are horrifying.
The visuals and sound in "Dead Space 2" are truly phenomenal, and they blend perfectly to transport the player directly into the action. The noises around Clarke are believable, and accurately timed, and the Sci-Fi setting is served well by graphics which allow for spectacular ships and views of outer space. Even the costume design, down to the hallmark armor Clarke wears throughout the game, is resplendent on the screen down to the glowing health gauge on his back.
"Dead Space 2" offers multiplayer via online co-op with Xbox Live, which opens up a new element of this innovative video game. Players are either humans or the various monsters present in the game, each trying to survive while stopping the others. Some fans of "Dead Space 2" seem truly blown away by the multiplayer, while others found it lackluster or even boring. As a player who is irritated by online-only multiplayer, I didn't spend a whole lot of time exploring this feature of the game.
The upgrades to armor and weapons are pretty impressive, and the game actually makes you work for the nodes required to employ these features. With so many options, "Dead Space 2" also has considerable replay value.
"Dead Space 2" Cons:
In terms of Survival Horror video games, there is disturbing-and then there's downright horrid. One of the abilities Clarke has involves stomping something on the ground rather savagely, and unfortunately this includes discarded bodies. Limbs go flying, blood splatters through the air-you get the picture. Of course, some players are apt to find this ability better listed in the Pros category.
The main storyline is a little weak in comparison to the other features of "Dead Space 2," including Clarke's personal angle within the story.
"Dead Space 2" is one of countless new releases to neglect offline co-op mode despite including an Xbox Live multiplayer feature, as mentioned above. This is actually a pretty huge con for me, and one that is present in far too many new release video games.
"Dead Space 2" Final Verdict: 4.5/5
Ultimately, this is an absolute must-try for anyone who enjoys the Survivor Horror genre. It is one of the first video games in a long time to actually creep me out, and the game designers didn't resort to the usual "Boo Tactics" which are good for a shock at best. Instead, "Dead Space 2" actually transports you into a world full of terror, and you quickly learn how to kill the monsters as efficiently as possible-which includes dismembering their bodies and impaling other Necromorphs with these discarded limbs. I can't say enough about how the graphics, audio and atmosphere of "Dead Space 2" really gets the horror job done, while having a storyline the player can be truly interested in. It offers enough replay value to merit purchasing, especially if you happen to enjoy the online multiplayer option.
