Deadliest Catch - Season One
On May 13, 2009, Caleb Dantloff held an interview with Steven Spielberg for 'BU Today Arts & Entertainment' in which Mr. Spielberg said Deadliest Catch was his favorite show. He also says, "The only thought process I have when I'm watching Deadliest Catch is I hope I'm never caught at sea in a storm."
The show Deadliest Catch is all about crab fishing off the Alaskan coast in the very cold Bering Sea, and it's one of the most dangerous jobs there are. In the beginning of season one nearly 1500 fishermen are in Dutch Harbor Alaska in hopes of making enough money during the King crab and Opilio crab seasons, to see them through the year.
There are ten episodes in season one, and each one is just as exciting as the last one watched. King crab season begins, and the cameras concentrate on the crews of six fishing vessels; Northwestern, Fierce Allegiance, Saga, Sea Star, Western Viking and Lucky Lady.
Episode One: Greenhorns
You can feel the excitement and anticipation as the radio counts down for the fishing season to begin. It's a long time now, before anybody gets any rest.
Episode Two: Long Sleepless Nights
The greenhorns learn early on that nobody feels sorry for them when they get tired. The old salts push them even harder.
Captain Gary Edwards of the 'Big Valley' gives a lesson on survival suits.
Episode Three: Lady Luck
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game just announce an early closure to the season, so the pressure is on for every one of the crab pots to count.
Episode Four: Beat the Clock
Since there is less than half a day left, the crews race to get the last of their catch in, and then they race to the processing plants. It's first-come, first-served, so just a few minutes can mean the difference between being able to unload immediately or having to wait for hours, or maybe days.
After the tally is in, and each vessel is paid for their catch, this is what is made.
Northwestern - $363,188/$16,000 per deckhand
Fierce Allegiance - $271,121/$10,000 per deckhand
Saga - $187,896/$8,000 per deckhand
Sea Star - $164,802/$7,000 per deckhand
Western Viking - $$149,584/$6,000 per deckhand
Lucky Lady - $113,711/$8,000 per deckhand
Episode Five and Six: Dead of Winter and Man Overboard
It's January, and 171 boats leave Dutch Harbor to catch Opilio crabs. The season begins, and gale warnings alert captains of treacherous ice conditions. If this ice is allowed to build up on the crab pots, it could cause a boat to capsize.
The 'Big Valley' sinks, loosing five of its six crew, and a deckhand from the 'Sultan' falls overboard.
Episode Seven: High Hopes
The weather gets better, making the crab season easier.
Episode Eight: Good Fishing
The boats are getting record numbers of crabs, but then there are rumors of early closure of the season.
Episode Nine: The Clock is Ticking
The season is coming to an end, and the crew is getting tired.
Episode Ten: The Final Run
Quite a bit more money is made in Opilio season.
Northwestern - $27,000 per deckhand
Maverick - $21,700 per deckhand
Retriever - $16,400 per deckhand
Lady Alaska - $13,500 per deckhand
Billikin - $10,700 per deckhand
The Opilio crab season has been a hard one for all the fishermen. The loss of the 'Big Valley' and five of her six crewmen had been hard on everybody. The first season had finally come to an end.
