As in other seasons, the boats head out into the Bering Sea with their crews to fish for crab in some of the most dangerous waters in the world. The season is as exciting as the others. It begins on a sad note, with several fishermen being lost to the unforgiving sea. The danger that is inherent to this occupation never ceases to amaze. It leaves you feeling that something awful could happen at any given moment.
Sig Hansen and Phil Harris rekindle their old rivalry. A new face this season is Blake Painter of the Maverick. It is always interesting to see how a new captain and his crew, who are primarily greenhorns, stand up against the challenges. Painter spent the beginning of the season calling the other captains on the radio for advice on good fishing grounds. He eventually gave up and chose a random spot, which surprisingly led to great results. Painter later miscalculated his quota and mistakenly believed he had already reached it. That led him to releasing several pots that were full, and was a big setback for him.
Aboard the Time Bandit, one of the crew members is swept overboard after his teammates headed below to rest. The captain quickly noticed that he was missing after a large wave hit the boat, and his attention led to a quick rescue that saved the man's life. Captain Johnathan Hillstrand was overwhelmed with emotion at the rescue, since he had been in that situation before, and had once lost a man that could not be rescued in time.
If you were unable to watch season three of the Deadliest Catch when it aired on television, you should definitely purchase the DVD version. In addition to all of the episode, the DVD contains extra footage that was never aired. This includes a behind-the-scenes look at how the series was filmed, and I have to say that operating a film camera on one of these boats seems like a dangerous occupation in itself.
