Deadliest Catch Season Two DVD Review

Kathi Downs
Deadliest Catch is a documentary produced for the Discovery Channel that shows life aboard some of the fishing vessels in the Bering Sea, along the Alaska coast during King crab and Opilio crab fishing seasons. Because commercial fishing has long been considered one of the most dangerous jobs, the show was named Deadliest Catch.

Season Two of Deadliest Catch has three DVD's to the set. It is in 'full - screen' format, and has not been rated (NR).

In some of the early episodes in Season Two computer-generated imagery (CGI) was used because some of the shots would be too difficult to show with a camera. When the 'Big Valley' sank because of an overloaded deck, CGI showed how this happened.

Heading Out to Sea

As Season Two starts, the Coast Guard is beginning to crack down on the rules and regulations of the vessels, and there is a big storm approaching. Captain Johnathan Hillstrand decides to take his vessel, 'Time Bandit' and crew out. They are the first ones out. Sig Hansen takes 'Northwestern' and his crew out, the next day.

Batten Down the Hatches

Captain Eric of the 'Rollo' doesn't believe in wasting good weather. He wakes his crew to start dropping crab pots. The Northwestern gets word that there is a storm coming, and different of the captains have to decide whether to wait out the storm, or fish through it.

On the Crab

Even though the storm is still raging, the Northwestern decides to go back out. She does well until a crane brakes; slowing things down.

The crew of the 'Rollo' is having terrible luck. They are pulling up mostly females, and its illegal to keep them. Captain Hillstrand's decision to be the first to leave pays off. Already he has a boat full of crab, and the 'Time Bandit' will be the first boat able to unload.

The Finish Line

The Coast Guard shows up and does a random top to bottom inspection of the 'Rollo.' They pass with thumbs up.

Captain Corky Tilly of the 'Aleutian Ballad' is forced back to Dutch Harbor. He has a greenhorn onboard that is threatening to jump overboard unless he is taken back. After they get back to their fishing grounds, a massive wave puts the 'Aleutian Ballad' on its side, and the captain and crew work all night to save the boat, and themselves.

As the King crab season ends, and the captains are paid for their loads; the men get paid.

'Cornelia Marie' - $30,000 per deckhand

"Northwestern' - $47,000 per deckhand

'Time Bandit' - $21,234 per deckhand

'Rollo' - $19,272 per deckhand

'Maverick' - $18,743 per deckhand

Friends and Rivals

The season paid well, and the men make time for jokes and pranks.

A New Hunt Begins

Opilio season begins, and vessels head out.

Smoke on the Water

With most of the boats out battling the storms, Sig Hansen and the crew of the Northwestern decide to fish for Cod instead of Opilio. They are able to soak in the sunshine.

Man vs. Ice

Fights begin to break out on the 'Maverick' and the 'Rollo.'

On the Edge

The 'Maverick' has to fish even though the flu has struck everyone on the boat.

Even though the 'Northwestern' switched to Cod, they made enough to pay the deckhands $14,000 each. Alan Evich, a long time crew member decides to leave the crew as he no longer wants to risk his life fishing for crab.

Race Against the Ice

Freezing weather and severe icing has begun to make life miserable. Ship hands are forced to take breaks from fishing to knock ice away from equipment.

The crew of the'Time Bandit' spends an entire day chipping the ice off the boat. It is -25 degrees.

The Opilio season is over, and the boats and crews head back to port with eager anticipation; awaiting the greetings and hugs of friends and loved ones.
