Deadly Effect Of Florida Drought and Fires

Plants and wildlife are being severly affected by fires and lack of water

Stepping outside the house lately has been like stepping into a smoke filled room....The fires have been burning for weeks now all over my dear state of Florida...From the central portions near Orlando to the southern most reaches of South Florida, the fires just won't give up.

It's been just awful to drive on some of the roads leading to the West Coast, Krome Ave has been shut down a few times..The turnpike was almost hazardous to drive a few days last week...Well, it can be hazardous all year for one reason or another

Yesterday small birds were dropping from the sky in one area of North Miami..They day those little creatures couldn't breathe the air and with their tiny lungs just couldn't survive. People are taking to wearing masks over their faces when they go out especially those with asthma or lung conditions...The news shows say to stay home if you can.

Cars are covered in ash and as are our outdoor furniture. The sky looks eerie, overcast and at night as the sun is setting it has a strange color and glow, actually very pretty in an odd way

And, our plants, yards and lawns are really suffering. They tell us not to water more than once a week now or we will be fined. Just last month I bought some beautiful flowering plants and transplanted them into large pots and some into the ground...We all know that anything newly planted needs plenty of water so I have been just watering those. The other day I saw a neighbor watching me...I got paranoid since stories are all around about neighbors informing on neighbors to the powers that be...Fines are being given for such infractions

But the strange thing is that it's really a michmash of laws, none really consistent between Miami and Ft Lauderdale... but the calls are coming in, In Cooper city, located in Broward county, 195 citations have been dished out. In Pinecrest, located in south Miami, more than 70 people have been cited for breaking the rules.. The warnings are over and now the informers are coming out of the woodwork..people who have known each other for years are informing on each other...it makes me sick!..I have to sneak out with my watering can to save my little flowers, forget about the landscaping we just put in after painting the house...

The most important thing is that the fires stop, and stop soon. Is it Global warming? How can anyone with any brain at all in their heads say that it's not related on one way or another....the fires are raging from California to Florida....and it's just the beginning of the dry season for some states. Florida will get some relief soon as hurricane season approaches bringing rains that will pummel the land, but is that a good thing? Just ask anyone who's lived through a Hurricane, which would they rather have, the dry season or the wet.....Thats a tough question to answer for anyone.....I know I don't have the answer...I would certainly like to see my little flowers survive though.....do I trust my neighbors? Another tough one...I think so, but for the time being I will water my plants very carefully when no one is around with as little water as possible to keep them alive....

I hope the birds stop dropping from the sky

I live 30 miles out sdie of Jacksonville. It was terrible here. We had smoke from the fire in Georgia, from the fire down near Palatka, then the Georgia fire jumped the state line, and the northern part of our county was evacuated. You couldn't breath for days. Thank goodness I think that is all over now.

This is truly a shocking description. I chose this article because of the surprise of the birds dropping. Just as shocking are the spies in your neighborhoods! Excellent article.

Live in the desert southwest. Have seen bird drop dead similarly here too. As weird as it seems, we are also in an extensive drought. Even the desert has a rainy season, which has not been what it should be for too long now. Just like your area.

Every time I think of moving to Florida there seems to be a fire or hurricane. You are a strong person!

Hope you get relief soon. Poor little birds.

Wow. Craig and I were in Orlando last year when the fires raged out of control near Cape Kennedy. I'm sorry you're going through this.
