Deadmau5 Unhooked Performing for XS Nightclub Two Year Anniversary Bash

Brittany Walters-Bearden
The Two Year Anniversary Party at XS Nightclub in The Encore at Wynn was one of the most over-the-top parties Las Vegas has ever seen, featuring a stellar performance by Deadmau5 and a celebrity and VIP-packed guest list that included former Girls Next Door star, Peepshow at Planet Hollywood's headliner and Holly's World star, Holly Madison. Las Vegas's newest VIP hostess, the gorgeous and affable Brittany Christian, fresh from LA, starts your night off with gracious hostessing, making it evident where Wynn and Encore's reputation for stellar VIP service comes from.

After being ushered into the visually stunning club, you are surrounded with the elite of Las Vegas, encircled by social fixtures and celebrities like "The Champagne King of Las Vegas," Don Johnson and a menagerie of socialites and models like Doris Petrovich and Mary Elez, and Maxim's Tara Gaddy, among the rest of the Vegas inner circle. It was evident who everyone was there to see, with a club filled with glowing mau5ears and custom-made mau5heads and Holly Madison, Las Vegas' most fabulous celebrity, even participated in the mouse-themed festivities, out with her entourage in full force after her Peepshow performance, wearing a fuzzy hat with mau5ears over her signature blonde ringlets, as stunningly beautiful as ever.

The go-go dancers wore tutus, rhinestone bras, XS tank tops, and, of course, the evening's ubiquitous mau5ears. There was never a pause in the high-energy go-go dancing festivities, rotating girls out all evening rather than taking song breaks, adding more dancers to the mix as the evening went on, with dancers by the DJ booth, atop the poolside bar, and on satellite stages throughout the club, displaying sheer energy and enthusiasm, interacting with and pumping up the crowd to tracks like Kaskade's "Fire in Your New Shoes" and Ellie Goulding's "Starry Eyed."

At 12:30, the entire club went dark and silent, exciting the anxious crowd in to a frenzy of chanting "Deadmau5, Deadmau5, Deadmau5" unanimously. The legendary Canadian performer (don't call him a DJ!) entered to an eerie high-drama intro of howling wind, building the beat into an explosive dance number as the enormous overhead chandelier increased speed, spinning uncontrollably, an amazing spectacle of production. Wearing a DC hoodie and his signature chrome mau5head that resembled a mouse-shaped discoball, Deadmau5 proved that he was the master of sound, titillating his crowd of Mau5kateers.

His phenomenal stage presence and overall performance value as he bobbed his mau5head uncontrollably with the music explicated his objection to the label "DJ." When given the label he DJ, he "rolls his eyes at the description, which he sees as a hopelessly outdated way of describing what he does." He describes his sets as "live performances" in which he "assembles tracks on the fly." In explaining the difference between his performances and a typical "DJ" performance, he explicates, "It's a technological orgy up there and I try and keep it more my music than anyone else's. If people come out to see Deadmau5 I want them to hear Deadmau5 music."

Epitomizing his unique blend of music and use of computer technology, much of which employs software he's written himself, was the performance of a dramatically low pitch that reverberated through your body like an electronica organ, while simultaneously playing a high-pitched screeching, offering a huge disparity in pitches, that segued into clips of lyrics from Elton John's Tiny Dancer, with the lyrics "hold me closer tiny dancer, had a busy day today -- " repeated, an appropriate lyrical backdrop to the go go dancers in ballerina tutus who moved sensuously to the music.

As he played his famed tracks like "Ghosts n Stuff", his cult-like following made it evident that he had created an interesting reverse on the tale of The Pied Piper, a mouse leading the people, rather a person leading mice. Deadmau5 had a phenomenal performance at the XS Two Year Anniversary Party, the perfect end to the holiday weekend of over-the-top events that included Felix da Housecat at Rain and Above & Beyond at Marquee.
