'Deal or No Deal' Host Howie Mandel Talks About Adult ADHD

Heather K. Adams
ADHD is not just a childhood affliction. Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is real, says Howie Mandel, host of NBC's popular game show 'Deal or No Deal'.

Howie Mandel told Fresno viewers in an interview on KSEE News 24's morning show this morning that he suffers from Adult ADHD and discussed how he deals with the symptoms. He also referenced a website he is working with, www.adultadhdisreal.com, for folks interested in learning more about Adult ADHD.

On the website www.adultadhdisreal.com, Howie Mandel discloses his personal struggle and diagnosis with Adult ADHD. Mandel said, "You might not know is that I am also one of the estimated 10 million adults in the United States who may have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)."

Signs and Symptoms of Adult ADHD

According to www.adultadhdisreal.com, there are three major indicators of Adult ADHD: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. There is an Adult ADHD self-screening test on the website.

My results of the Adult ADHD self-screening test on www.adultadhdisreal.com

I answered the 16-question test with complete honesty, even admitting that I often interrupt people when they are busy and I have a tendency to finish people's sentences. The only question I didn't answer with a 'sometimes' or an 'often' was the one about getting up and moving around in situations where I was expected to remain seated.

The Adult ADHD self-screening does not offer a diagnosis. Rather it compiles your answers in a form to print out to take to your doctor. At the top of my results, it said, "The following can be used as a starting point to help you recognize the signs/symptoms of ADHD, but is not meant to replace consultation with a trained healthcare professional. An accurate diagnosis can only be made through a clinical evaluation. Regardless of the questionnaire results, if you have concerns about diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, please discuss your concerns with your physician."

Shoot. I was hoping my answers to the 16 questions would tell me for sure if I suffer from Adult ADHD. But I printed off my results to share with my physician at my next appointment anyway.

Statistics of Adult ADHD

According to KSEE News 24 in their article about the Howie Mandel interview, ADHD affects approximately 4.4 percent of U.S. adults aged 18 to 44 years. Their numbers were obtained from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication. Approximately 6.7 million adults may have Adult ADHD and not know it.

My family's experience with Adult ADHD

I have a family member who had ADHD as a child, and now she suffers from Adult ADHD. She really struggles daily to keep herself organized and on track. She gets bogged down in the details, not being able to see the forest for the trees. Because her childhood ADHD went undiagnosed for so long, she missed some basic skills from elementary school, which she struggles with now.

Conversations with this family member are scattered. She flits from one subject to the next, often with no logical segue into the next topic. Her condition is untreated. However, since reading the facts on www.adultadhdisreal.com, and with Howie Mandel's personal testimony, I will encourage her to seek professional treatment for her Adult ADHD.
