Dealing with a Bad Boss

Teresa (Tracey) Stanisha
Many people have had jobs in which they are constantly having to deal with a bad boss. This can be extremely trying on someone's nerves and will cause a lot of stress. A bad boss can make people literally sick, so it is important to implement changes to ease the situation and make it bearable.

Try these tips to lessen the stress when you are dealing with a bad boss. Never be insubordinate, yet try to protect yourself as you go through your daily duties.

Bad bosses usually treat others with disrespect and they do not use their words properly. This can be extremely upsetting to a worker when they are demeaned and treated poorly. When this happens to you, do not take the words literally. Listen to what the boss expects of you, but let the rest go. Don't concentrate on cut downs or other unnecessary criticisms. The reason that they lash out at their workers is because they know they are lacking in their managerial skills.

It might seem easy to say but not to do. When you get used to weeding out the good things that they say you will be able to do your job better. Leave the insults on the table and simply refuse to listen to them. Don't get angry because it will only make it more difficult for you.

Staying calm is important when you are dealing with a bad boss. Never lose your cool. If there is someone that you can talk to about it, by all means do. You can also report the boss if you feel that they are completely out of line and there are places that will help you with that.

Another way to deal with a bad boss is to offer them a compliment on their work or their work environment. This might help lessen their anger and keep it from being directed at you.

Make sure that you do your job very well. Others around you will notice and the people above your boss will notice. This will surely be noticed and make it easier for you to get your duties done.

If your boss is unbearable and there is no way to counteract, then weigh the pros and cons of your situation. If you do not like the job begin to look for another one or if wish to stay look into switching to another department. If you like the job look into a way that you can move into management, too and implement the process that you need to do so.

There are many bad bosses out there. Many do not have the proper education, skills or training to manage other people. Because of these facts, workers need to do what they can to get through some tough situations. Use the tips above and remember that if you need assistance go to your human resources department and find out what you can do about it. Everyone should receive respect when they work on a job, so make sure that you take the steps to get it.
