Dealing with Your Daughter's Natural Curly Hair

I have natural curly hair. I deal with it and style it the best that I can. I have learned many tricks and secrets to keeping it healthy and keeping the curls frizz free. I have also learned to straighten it and wear it in different styles.

Now that I have a daughter with natural curly hair, things are different. It is much more difficult to deal with someone else's natural curls.

Children run and romp and play much more than adults. Therefore, they get many more knots and tangles in their hair. Girls are especially prone to tangles because their hair is longer than boys.

Detangling and brushing the hair of a natural curly headed little girl can be a battle. After a couple of brushes, she is usually screaming and running from you. The key is to make this process as painless for both of you as possible.

When brushing the hair of a child with natural curly hair, always wait unlit the hair is wet. Wash it first with a detangling smooth shampoo. OF all of the shampoos that I have tried, I think that the Suave smoothers detangling works best. May daughter loves the strawberry smell. The smoothers shampoo is creamier and helps with the tangles. After shampooing, be sure to use a detangling spray. Most work about the same. I use the Vo5 no more knots spray. Then use a pick or comb and begin brushing. I hold the hair tight near the scalp. I then brush what is loose hanging down. By holding tight at the top you preventing from pulling too hard at the scalp. If you do not hold tight at the top and begin pulling at a tangle at the bottom, there will be a great pull at the scalp and a lot of pain.

After all of the knots and tangles are out, use a mousse (I like gel to mousse) and scrunch the curls. It works best if you let the hair dry naturally or dry only enough to get the majority of the water out. When styling and not washing first use a gel spray or a frizz ease spray and scrunch to release the frizz.

In many cases, you child will probably want her hair pulled up or back off of her face. Dog ears and braids look really cute with natural curly hair. No matter how it is fixed, everyone will admire it.

OMG, yes! My middle daughter (she's almost 4) has naturally curly hair and it is a daily struggle. Another tip: We take a bath at night and we braid it into two braids to keep it from tangling while she sleeps.
