Dealing with Depression in the Family

Do You Know Some of the Warning Signs of Depression?

Matthew Schieltz
Millions of Americans are inflicted with Depression and suffer with it each year. Even though there are clinical programs and brain treatment programs all across the country, millions of families suffer through their difficulties each year of dealing with someone in their family who has been diagnosed with some form of Depression disorder or another. Even though there are several types of Depression that affect those millions of people within society, the main effects that people see while dealing with it within their family are: withdrawn attitude, general feelings of sadness, and also feelings of worthlessness. People with a severe Depression disorder may even act out in an angry or frustrated attitude or may isolate themselves from the rest of the family. Even though that person's family might be scared of the Depression or mental disorder, this is the moment when that individual really needs them!

Caring for a Depressed Person

There are some definite things that the whole family can do to help the depressed person cope with their Depression. The first is that they need to realize that the depressed person cannot simply "snap out of it" or somehow make themselves better. The Depression may be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain or it might have been triggered by a traumatic event. Whatever the cause of the Depression, the depressed person should be seeking professional treatment and not be expected to simply overcome the Depression disorder all at once.

Another thing that the family needs to do is to treat the depressed individual with loving kindness. Even though they shouldn't be walking on eggshells for fear that it might trigger an unwanted reaction in the depressed individual, they should be careful not to exasperate their loved one. Along with this comes the responsibility to make sure that they're included in all of the family events. Additionally, one should find ways to make the person feel special and make them feel like they are truly needed and wanted.

Depression: A Family Affair

When one person of the whole family suffers from a form of Depression, often it seems as though the whole family is inflicted with the disorder. It is true that the whole family must live with it; when living with a depressed family member, the whole family must stick together in order to survive this rough time. Chances are that the situation will get worse before it gets better, so being prepared to stick together through the worst time is crucial to surviving.

It also wouldn't hurt to learn about the disorder. You can gain as much information from the internet as well as from the doctors and the professionals that are helping your family member. Learning from Depression and how it can severely affect the depressed individual will help you learn even about the disorder that your loved one is suffering from.

All in all, Depression is not a disorder to be taken lightly and millions of Americans suffer from it each and every year. Seeking out professional help is a good idea in itself, but the whole family must come together in order to not only stick together through this rough time, but to help the family member that is suffering from Depression.
