Many people have different feelings when they first find out that they are a Type 2 Diabetic. Usually a urine analysis is done to confirm if glucose levels in the body are high. High blood sugar is called hyperglycemia. You probably had a fasting blood glucose test, a non-fasting blood glucose test, or an oral glucose tolerance test. Then you were asked to go your doctor's office, or you even received a simple phone call from your doctor's office that changed your life because you were diagnosed with having Type 2 Diabetes. After receiving the news, you will probably have to deal with lots of feelings of being a Type 2 Diabetic.

Surprise

You might feel surprised by the information that you are now a Type 2 Diabetic. You might not have known that some of the body symptoms that you were experiencing were leading to something so serious. For example, increased urination, fatigue, and increased thirst are all signs and symptoms of diabetes. So, the first reaction that you might feel is total surprise and shock that you actually have diabetes.

Denial

Another emotion that you might feel is denial. You might want your doctor to retest you because you swear that you definitely do not have diabetes. You may make excuses that maybe you did not fast for long enough, or that you ate such high amounts of sugar the day before the testing that it must have thrown off the test. Heck, you might even blame the people. In all accounts, you just do not believe that you could possibly have Type 2 Diabetes.

Confusion

Most people who are diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes find out when they are a bit older in life. It might totally confuse them that they got diagnosed with diabetes. They might think that if they were diabetic that they would have gotten diagnosed with it sooner. Also, there is confusion as to what exactly being diabetic means. They might also feel overwhelmed. Being a diabetic is a total life change, and learning how to eat, take your sugars, using medications, and other things can be totally confusing.

Depression

It is pretty common for people who have just found out that they have Type 2 Diabetes to be depressed. Having diabetes is such a huge thing to find out. It can put people into a tailspin, and just make a person really sad. There are so many warnings that come with being a diabetic that it is easy to see why a person can become depressed. There is no question that having diabetes can make your life harder. A person may want to just crawl into bed, and hope that the diagnosis was just a bad dream.

Anger

You may just feel like throwing your fist through the wall when finding out that you have Type 2 Diabetes. Finding out that you have diabetes can make many people angry. You might ask the question. "Why Me"? You might be mad that you have to change your eating style, that you have to take medication, or that you have to test your sugars. It is normal to be angry. However, my tip to you is to not actually punch that wall. Try writing out your feelings instead of letting out your anger in an unhealthy way.

All Feelings

No matter how you are feeling after getting diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes it is okay. Everyone is entitled to their feelings. However, if you are feeling negative feelings it is important to not let them last long. Although being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes is not easy there is support out there for you. Join a support group. Read books and research online about the subject. Talk to your doctor and loved ones about your feelings. Sharing your feelings will help you move on, and learning more information about diabetes will make you feel better. Take a negative and make it into a positive.
