Dealing with Malicious Software

Alex Tekan
There are software programs which have been designed to vandalize existing hard drives in the World Wide Web. These programs serve only nefarious purposes and have been in existence since the first software programs have been created. Some of these programs, the Iloveyou virus and the 1999 Melissa virus for example, created havoc on computer systems worldwide.

These programs come in many shapes and forms. Foremost among them is a virus which creates havoc not only on one's system but also on other systems if plugged into the network. A worm on the other hand embeds itself into one's system which in turns wreaks havoc on one's information data base. The third and most dangerous is the Trojan, which is a file attached or embedded in other software and once entering a clean system, releases its contents to cause harm to one's hard drive and software.

Technological advances in hardware and software technology has bred a more innovative and more sinister software designed to crash computer systems. Many of these programs eat away at vital data, leaving hard disks unusable or information irretrievable. There are also those which serve to vandalize websites or others create junk data to flood the system and thus crash the system. And the sole purpose of these is to create anarchy or even revenge.

With the advent of broadband connections, many other viruses or malicious software have come into existence. These newer software have been designed to propagate itself and use the information available once it has embedded itself into the system. These types of software have presented many more problems and have become harder to manage. Common occurrences include using your email address to send out spam mail. In other programs, embedded images of child pornography permeate your system making one open to criminal prosecution. For profit purposes, some programs use the stored banking information one has in their hard drive, as internet banking is now more popular than ever, and once one's electronic banking footprints are recorded, this information would be used to clean out the bank account or credit card.

One has to be quite careful when opening attachments. With these problems are the available solutions found on the internet. Just reach out to the net in order to solve the problems caused by the net. Finding antivirus and clean up software is easy enough, and many are freeware. But to be sure, it would be best to have one's PC checked up periodically to clean up possible risks embedded in the system.
