Dealing with Personal Loss

John Vann
At one point or another, there comes a time in everybody's life when we need to each deal with the personal loss of a loved one. Whether it is old age, cancer, or an unexpected and untimely death, dealing with the loss is never easy. Everybody has their own way of coping with it, and there is no right or wrong way.

It is important to know that there is help out there for those who need it. A quick internet search can yield thousands of results with tips and techniques to deal with a painful loss, as well as message boards and discussion forums. Here you can talk and exchange e-mails with others, share your experience and even learn from the experiences of other human beings from all over the world. Many times you can even find somebody who is coping with the exact type of loss you are, at the exact same time in their life. This kind of supportive connection can be invaluable in the healing process.

Some people however, deal with loss by spending some time alone with their thoughts, reading a book or getting lost in a favorite movie; and others still find solace in the arms of a loved one. But for some, the loss of a loved one hits particularly hard, and there is no choice but to seek help from a professional counselor.

Therapists and counselors are well educated on a variety of subjects, and can be a great resource when it comes to the healing process of coping with a loss. Not only can they offer their advice from a professional standpoint, but they can provide you with quality tips and techniques that have already been proven to work. They may even be able to get you involved in a local support group that you might have not known about. Many people seek the help of a professional counselor or therapist when dealing with grief, and this is usually one of the most successful methods.

But of course, to truly deal with a loss you are just going to have to get on living your life. Its okay to grieve, but don't dwell on the pain for too long. The quicker you can get over your personal loss, the quicker you'll be able to get back to your normal way of living. After all, isn't that what we all strive for in times of great emotional distress and personal loss?
