The very first problem situation for many people when putting together their resume is not having experience in the industry they want to get into. This could be someone just entering the job market or someone who wants to change careers.
What a person needs to do is highlight their strengths within there resume. Focus on the accomplishments and experience that you have gain that are highly relevant to the position you are applying for. By taking things like personal interests, related duties in other positions, special projects, etc. you can demonstrate that you not only have the skills for the position but you also have an understanding of the industry you are applying for.
Another common problem of not having a college degree many job seekers don't know how to address on their resume. Unless you are planning to complete a degree within the near future this is not something easily rectified. Once again focus on your strengths and experiences that make you the right person for the position.
To make not having a college degrees less obvious on your resume just eliminate an education section from your resume all together. Putting your high school down will just emphasize the lack of a college degree. You can also replace the education section with a professional development section. Here you can highlight your achievements in the work world.
The third problem situation that is becoming more and more common these days is that of being too old. Now most job seekers don't feel they are too old, they think the places they are applying to think they are too old. The reality is age discrimination does exist but there are ways to get around it in your resume so you get the job interview. I hope that during your job interview you can impress them with the maturity and experience that only comes from age.
Do not give anymore experience past 20 years. You can then put your additional experience under prior experience and leave off the dates. Another way to work around this problem situation on your resume is to leave the dates off of your education. The hope is that the hiring authority will be so impressed with your skills that they will call you in for an interview.
You need to realize that all of these issues will have to be addressed during the job interview. Remember that the goal of your resume is to get you the interview. From there your job interviewing skills need to take you to the next step and get the position.
