Dealing with Thank You Notes

One of the aspects of today's society that has been somewhat lost over the past several years has to do with sending thank you notes. And that is a shame because it should not be that way. Regardless of whether it is a birthday, wedding, house warming party, etc., sending a thank you note is polite and a meaningful way of showing your appreciation to someone. It only makes sense when you think about it. How do you feel when you get a thank you card in the mail, or someone simply says thank you during the day for some reason? You feel good about it.

I can remember back as a small child when I would get a birthday present, my parents always had me write out a thank you note and send it off in the mail. Even if I couldn't write my name real well, I would color a picture and send it off with my parents help. It gave my grandparents some very special memories over the years. Of course, when I got older I was able to do my own thank you notes.

You can find than you notes in many different styles and sizes, as well as ones that even include the envelopes. Most stores will sell a thank you kit that includes the specially designed paper.

What should you write out in a thank you note? Well, that is personal of course, but you can put whatever you want on them. There is no need to write out a novel or a long drawn out letter if you don't want to. Just a simple thanks for the gift will let the person know you are thinking of them and that you appreciate their thoughtfulness. You want to be sure to handwrite them out in order for them to be personalized. I wouldn't advise typing one out on the computer or buying a pre-printed one. It makes them seem very impersonal.

Finally, you want to be sure and send them off in the mail quickly. Don't wait for 6 months or more to send anyone a thank you note. I know that it can be difficult in situations such as a wedding to send off 50-100 thank you notes at one time. The right approach is to get them all out within a month of the event. That will give you plenty of time to write out 5-10 a day. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes to do one.

Naturally, if you are sending a note to a distant relative you should take a few extra moments to include a note on what has been going on in your life, how the kids are doing, etc. You may also want to include a picture as a nice touch to the note.

No matter how you go about telling someone thank you for their gift, the most important part is to just do it. Make the effort let someone know you care enough about their gift to say thank you. After all, they made the effort to think of you and purchase the gift, so you should be courteous and thank them in return.
