Dealing with Unprofessional People and Ridiculous Comments Made by Others on AC

Criticism is Important but Defamation of Character is Wrong

Misha
Recently I have experienced an influx of ridiculous comments on my content. Some of the comments are made by people, who seem to have no idea as to what they are talking about, and second they are looking to be mean and spiteful. I understand the principle of free speech; it is what makes this country great. However what I do not understand is the inability of some people to make a constructive comment without calling names and being downright insulting. I had someone call me a liar, and a bunch of other filthy names in response to an article I wrote about a PC that I purchased a few years ago. I want to make it clear that this person singled me out and possibly other content producers. I never sought out or responded to anything that this person wrote, in fact I had no idea who they were.

My concern is that at the time I wrote the article the information was up to date. However due to changes in technology the information may not apply to current times. I do understand that technology has advanced; when I purchased the computer several years ago it did in fact have a modem inside of it. Apparently the person claims that I am lying and that it just wasn't true. I spoke the truth about an experience that I had, to my knowledge this person was not there when I purchased the computer. Yet I do not understand why the reader did not and would not take this in jest. Technology has changed significantly and if the person who made these allegations against me had noticed there was a date on the article of a few years ago they might have noticed that it was not a recent purchase. To verify that it was a previous purchase I also provided the model number of the computer.

The basis of my concern is that I received emails from this person whom I will not name, that contained graphic and insulting comments, calling me a liar with flavorful curse words. The only thing that comes to my mind is that this person works for one of the companies listed in my article. Apparently they disagree with me and that is fine. I can accept that not everyone will agree with everything or anything that I say. However I will not lower myself to respond to such immature and poorly spelled insults. I think that is what makes AC such a great place, because you can comment on others work, but it should be done with respect. It is unprofessional to make slurs and insult other people for a difference of opinion. Sure there have been times I have read things that I don't agree with. I may even make a comment but never with the intent to degrade another person for what they believe, or for sharing their perspective. I of course welcome constructive criticism with an open mind, but I will not tolerate abuse in any form.

So my suggestion for dealing with these type of unprofessional people who don't obviously understand what AC is all about, is to ignore it and move on. I have not and will not waste my time to respond to this person because I have no interest in getting into a battle of words. People who are full of such anger and hatred tend to feel insecure about themselves and feel the need to lash out at others to bring themselves up. So I would advise anyone who finds that they receive ridiculous or unprofessional comments, delete them and not allow it to bring them down. I find that letting it roll off of my back is the best advice I can offer to others.
