Dear Children

When I Am Old

Cassie Mae
Some days at work I just want to cry. I have gotten teary eyed when I hand out the mail to the elderly. Some residents never get ANY letters! No one visits them. Nada. In lieu of that ,I wrote a letter to my children for when I am old!!!! I see their days are the same 'ol same 'ol and what a treasure it'd be to hear from family.

I am going to observe exactly which residents do not get any mail. I'm going to start writing cards for them! Some will not remember but it'll make them happy (and me) if I can go in their room and read it to them and show them the picture. I do enjoy mail time as that is when I can talk "one on one" with the old folks. See if they get mail...then I go into their rooms and that is MORE visiting of someone to talk to, also.

Dear Children:

When I am old please visit me. I know you have busy schedules but please take a little time out. I love you dearly and you would be the gleaming sunshine in my day.

When I am old please send me mail. I would love to receive cards, letters or e-mails on how YOU are doing. How MY grandchildren are doing. Pictures my grandchildren have drawn to hang up I would cherish. Anything! Just "talk" to me.

When I am old please send me snapshots of your life. Holidays, new pets, a happy smile....

Even if I have dementia, please send me mail and visit me. I may not remember it for long but spending time with you is what I crave.

Mail me or bring me video tapes of anything fun you have done. Let me share in your life.

When I am old please call me. I would love to hear your voice even if it is for only five minutes to tell you I love you.

Signed....

With Love,

~Your Adoring Mother~

The elderly appreciate visitors to nursing homes more than you know! Even if you are not a relative, someone to volunteer and chat with is a blessing. You think you are doing them a favor and in the end you find out it is good for your soul, too.

Wonderful, but....it makes me sad. Maybe I can make a difference in someone's life. My children are busy too. Don't want to think about the future much......

Good training, too, for when our kids are older....in case we end up in a nursing home!
