On Father's Day I want to tell you
how much you meant to me
When you took me by the hand,
oh how I loved you so
A little girl I was...
You took me in your arms
for the first dance with your daughter,
and even though you directed me
A young woman I was...
I took you in my arms,
told you I loved you
Not knowing it would be the last time
you heard these loving words
An adult woman I am...
Though I always told you I loved you,
I may not have told you of all the wonderful memories
of growing up with you as my dad;
Memories that continue to flood into my mind...
I remember the fun things you did with your children --
my brother, sister and I.
Especially that roller-coaster ride
in your little Corvair
that made all three of us scream with delight
while going up and down those hills you drove upon;
Telling us kids not to be afraid that you were,
after all, a New York City bus driver
and the safest driver around ...
What fun that day turned out to be!
Now just memories of the little boy you never got to be
in that orphanage you grew into manhood in,
but were for us three.
I still miss thee and wish our Father above
hadn't called you home with your brothers and sisters.
I love you forever and ever more
and my heart is still breaking so...
And that, my dear dad, is why I dedicate this poem and book to you
Happy First Father's Day in Heaven, Dad.

Post a CommentThat is a very nice poem. Of course, it made me think of my wonderful Father who passed on in 1986. Believe it or not he would have been 103 this past year.
It made me sad to know that your father grew up in an orphanage. I'm sure he is very happy now as is my dad and we will see them again in due time.
Thank you so much everyone for your wonderful comments :)!!! Jan, my dad also had heart disease after a heart attack in 1976, but he passed away from asbestos lung cancer which he had gotten while in the Navy during World War II but didn't know he had until he was diagnosed with it in 2001. By that time he had already lived with heart disease, a bout with prostate cancer, back surgery, and other health problems for over 30 years, so he didn't want the oncologists at Sloan Kettering (?sp?) in NYC to do any further treatments regarding the mesothelioma (asbestos lung cancer)...yet he lived another 4 years after his diagnosis! I know exactly how you feel when you say about your own dad that you think of him daily and often miss him even though it has been many years. Although it's only been four years since my dad passed, I feel the same way as you. And I know Carol and Sandra do too about their loved ones who passed on.
This one is so very moving. My father is also deceased and even though it has been many years, I think of him daily and often miss him. Life goes on, of course, and new joys come but I still wish I could have another day with him, while he was still healthy and not suffering with heart disease.
very moving, very beautiful, I know how you grieve for your father, you are such a gentle soul and you grieve for all your love one including tiger, your cherished pet.
Today, I read this and very quickly felt the pain as you very well know. A touching write... Well done my friend.. well done
