Dear NCAA: We Don't Care About USC, Reggie Bush, or the 2004 BCS Title Anymore

Caleb Rule
Dear NCAA,

Really? That's cute. No, honestly, we think what you're doing is quite comical.

Those poor Trojans of USC! Whatever will they do without that 2004 BCS (which stands for whatever the fans want it to, nowadays anyway) National Championship banner in their stadium?

Let's see here....fans still have photos....

-- .Bob Stoops still has the knock on his reputation.....

-- .Auburn fans are still pissed....

-- .oh, and I still have the memories of that beatdown in my mind.

Care to take any of that away? That's right, you can't. And thus, the impracticality of this whole PR stunt is obvious: The NCAA, because it can't seem to punish except for 'retroactively' (which implies that the 'active' part of it has any effect at all).

Now, don't get me wrong; the NCAA can't know what every recruit is doing at all times, and hey, we all found out about that whole Reggie Bush thing a little late. USC's reputation is tarnished, and Pete Carroll got out of there before the spaghetti hit the fan. So it's not like nothing has happened, right?

So why bother stripping away a title? As ESPNLA.com writer Arash Markazi writes, everyone in and around the Trojan program knows who won it all that year.

We, the fans, all know. The record books may say one thing, but honestly, we will all remember differently.

How do we fix this charade, then? How about putting a big fat asterisk next to USC's name in the books, instead? At least that would be a constant reminder to fans, boosters, recruits, and the like on a daily basis what happened. Hey, look at that whole steroids thing in baseball - you think fans have forgotten that whole mess yet?

The fact of the matter is, we fans want you to do something meaningful when you act. Taking away scholarships? That hurts a program. And we're glad USC's run as a dominant force will be hindered because they screwed up and are paying dearly for it. Bravo, fairness and justice!

So what bother with this? What purpose does it serve besides earning a recent college graduate a few extra pennies for gas money through performance views? (Thanks, by the way!)

If you're going to do something, make it count. A banner with a fat asterisk would be an interesting story, no?

Maybe that'd impact a few memories.

Sincerely,

The average college football fan
