Dear Prince, You Suck

Prince Completely Sells Out, Sues YouTube Over Content

Jason Willis
The Artist Formerly Known as the Artist Formerly Known as Prince has completely sold out. Prince has filed a suit against YouTube, EBay and others in an attempt to "reclaim his art" on the internet. What is ironic to me is that Universal Music Corp. has joined Prince in the suit.

This is the same guy that changed his name and wrote "slave" on his face because he did want Time Warner owning his music. Now he's teaming up with the record label?

YouTube has pulled over 1000 videos containing Prince content. I can understand pulling copyrighted music videos and downloaded concerts. A spokesperson for the singer said: "Prince feels very strongly that people should remember his concerts as they were, not as some grainy mobile phone footage." All well and good though if people paid oh, five or ten dollars for the content I'm sure he wouldn't mind as much. But where this video pulling gets ridiculous is pulling videos of local bands covering his songs, people singing karaoke to a Prince tune and even a 10 second clip of a baby dancing with a barely audible Prince song playing in the background.

What's next? Prince rolls up in his BMW next to you on the street and threatens to stick his high heel up your ass for signing along to "Purple Rain" while listening to your CD?

Prince used to love the internet! He had his own site npgmusic.com and you could pay to download exclusive content and new albums. But in 2006, Prince shut the site down. I guess the fat check he got form Universal helped plus the fact he's actually relevant again thanks to appearance on the Grammys and American Idol (which should tell you right there the man has COMPLETELY sold-out!).

What happened Prince? You used to preach about sharing the joy of music with everyone.

Another quote from the spokesman: "Prince believes strongly that as an artist the music rights must remain with the artist and thus copyrights should be protected across the board." Yeah right, if that's the case why are you so chummy with Universal? And how long before you are suing each other over control of your music? For a guy that once said, "I just want my music to be heard", it seems that he's willing to stick it to his most loyal supporters to accomplish that goal.

He should be grateful that people even fondly remember his music! Actually, I wonder if this has something to do with his new-found religion...y'know, he doesn't want all his soft-corn porn lyrics all over the Internet now that he's trying to be a good Jehovah's Witness. (And yes, I AM being sarcastic.)
