'Death Race 3' Speeding Your Way

Genre fans keep watching them so Universal keeps giving them to us. It has been announced that "Death Race 3" is charging our way at full-speed. The second film in the "Death Race" remake franchise was a prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's 2008 film. "Death Race 2" told the story of how the first psychotic metal-masked racer Frankenstein came to be. The second film was actually quite a bit of fun and had some great car crashes and mayhem.

All that is known about the plot of "Death Race 3" right now is that it will focus on off-road racing in the Mexican desert. There has been no explanation as to why or how the inmates of the prison come to be out in the middle of nowhere racing cars. It also has not been established if this will take place before or after the actual first "Death Race" film with Jason Statham.

It has been said that most of the cast from "Death Race 2" can be expected to return for the new sequel. Danny Trejo and Tanit Phoenix were mentioned by name. There has been no solid word on whether Ving Rhames or Luke Goss would be returning as Carl "Luke" Lucas/Frankenstein.

The first "Death Race" film was written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. It was based on the 1975 film "Death Race 2000," which starred Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine. Carradine had a cameo in the remake as the voice of Frankenstein, the character he played in the 1975 version.

Paul W.S. Anderson wrote the screenplay for "Death Race 3." Tony Giglio is presently getting the script in working order before production begins. Giglio wrote the screenplay for the upcoming "Arena," which stars Samuel L. Jackson, Daniel Dae Kim ("Lost") and Kellan Lutz ("Twilight").

I actually welcome "Death Race 3." The second installment looked great and did not suffer visually because of any budget cuts. The special effects looked fabulous and you could tell time was spent choreographing and setting up all the different wrecks and explosions.

Roel Reine is directing "Death Race 3". Reine directed "Death Race 2," so there should be a good sense of continuity and style between the two films. Reine has worked on films like "The Marine 2," Seven Seagal's "Pistol Whipped," and the upcoming "Scorpion King: Battle for Redemption." No set date for release has been announced yet.
