Death risk rankings. Seriously?

Yes, according to the website DeathRiskRankings.com, you can find out if you are likely to die in the next 12 months. This tool at DeathRiskRankings.com may actually come in handy when figuring out your long-term plans, or even next summer's vacation plans. No need to save money if you're going to die within the next 12 months. Right?

Who created DeathRiskRankings.com?

DeathRiskRankings.com was created by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, and it uses public data to predict your likelihood of dying in the next year.

How does DeathRiskRankings.com work?

When using the Death Comparison tool, you are asked to select how you would like to compare your chances of dying to others based on 66 causes of death, age, gender, race, US to Europe, regions in the US, and regions in Europe.

There is an option for a secondary comparison based on those same variables listed above, plus forecast length, which can be anywhere from one to 30 years.

The next step to calculate your death risk ranking is to plug in your personal information.

Will I die in the next 12 months, according to DeathRiskRankings.com?

When doing my death comparison on DeathRiskRankings.com, I chose to compare my chances by causes of death with no secondary comparison. (Too much data and my head will spin!) The forecast length I chose was the next 1 year.

And the results are in. (It takes a bit of time for DeathRiskRankings.com to calculate.) According to the chart of my death risk ranking, I will most likely die of some sort of cancer in the next 12 months. Second highest cause of death for someone my age in the next year is circulatory system diseases. I will be least likely to die of homicide, suicide or poisoning. To that I credit my geographical location. There aren't too many homicidal maniacs in my area.

What does the information from DeathRiskRankings.com prove?

In my opinion, nothing really. DeathRiskRankings.com isn't really going to tell you how or when you are going to die. It's a fun tool that gives sane, well-adjusted people a tantalizing glimpse into the future (much like horoscopes or palm reading). I can't say what the DeathRiskRankings.com does for those who aren't sane or well-adjusted.
