On March 16, Menu Foods announced a recall of its "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches. The FDA stated, in a press release the following day, that ten deaths had been reported so far. Nine of those fatalities involved cats. The actual number of pets sickened by the recalled food remains unknown, but fatalities continue to occur. It is too early to estimate how many fatalities will result over all.
According to the FDA, the affected food was produced at a plant in Emporia Kansas. Menu Foods also recalled food produced at a New Jersey factory as a precaution. The recalled food was manufactured at these plants between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007.
Wheat Gluten, a source of protein also used as a filler, is thought to be a possible source of the contamination. Menu foods had switched to a new supplier of wheat gluten around the time the recalled food was manufactured. The company has not yet conclusively identified the source of contamination, however, and Menu Foods and the FDA are investigating other possible sources.
The recall is, at this time, restricted to the "cuts and gravy" style foods but encompasses many brands of cat food and dog food. Some of the brands affected by the recall are:
-Americas Choice...-Authority...-Best Choice...-Eukanuba...-Fine Feline Cat...-Food Lion...-Foodtown...-Giant Companion...-Hannaford...-Hill Country Fare...
-Hy-Vee...-Iams...-Laura Lynn...-Li'l Red...-Loving Meals...-Meijer's Main Choice... Nutriplan...-Nutro Max Gourmet Classics...-Nutro Natural Choices...-Paws...-Pet Pride...-Presidents Choice...-Price Chopper...-Priority US...-Save-A-Lot...-Schnucks...-Science Diet Feline Savory Cuts Cans...-Sophisticat...-Special Kitty Canada...-Special Kitty US...-Springfield Prize...-Sprout...-Stop & Shop Companion...-Tops Companion...-Wegmans...-Weis Total Pet...-Western Family US...-White Rose...-Winn Dixie

Important Signs to watch for if your pet has consumed the recalled food:
If your pet exhibits signs of kidney failure such as vomiting, lethargy, and/or loss of appetite, you should consult your veterinarian immediately. Veterinary care is essential for animals exhibiting symptoms of kidney failure. More information on acute renal failure in pets can be found at www.petshealth.com/dr_library/felrenfail.html
In cases of kidney failure, the earlier the treatment begins the better.
If your pet is not showing any adverse reactions, but you are still concerned, your veterinarian can perform tests to rule out kidney problems.

Post a Comment:( oh, J.P. I am so sorry for your daughter's loss
My daughter lost "the twins" to the food before the recall was made public. ($2000 later, and 2 dead cats.)
It's dreadful to think of all those poor animals who died
Sophie
what's really bad is that there have been even more recalls due to this.
It is crazy that news is bustling on this topic and then whisk its all over.
