Sales
As a debt collector you have to be a sales person. You need sales skills that you can use when you speak to debtors that are past due. You will be required to convince or sell a debtor on the idea of paying their debts. You may use the idea that their credit will suffer. Or you may tell them that it will be tough for them to find a job if they don't pay their debts.
Negotiation
You need to be a good negotiator. A debtor may have a balance of $10,000 you may have to offer or negotiate a cash settlement. The more you can negotiate for the better. The debtor may offer to settle for $5,500 you may counter with $8,000 as the settlement amount.
Firm but Fair
As a debt collector you have to be firm when you make your demands but you cannot be unreasonable. If you make unfair demands then the debtor may break off the contact altogether. The debtor will give up and think what's the use.
Research
You may be required to do some research. Sometimes you have to locate a debtor before you can begin making arrangements. You may have to use the internet. Perhaps you need to contact the previous employer or the debtor's previous resident. Personal references are good for retrieving debtor location information.
Investigate
As a debt collector you may be required to investigate some situations. You may have to ask the debtor questions like why they are not paying. There will be some questions that are not comfortable. You may have to ask the debtor where they are receiving their source of income from. How are you living? How do you pay your phone bill? Questions such as these can be very uncomfortable to ask. As a debt collector they are a part of the job.
