Debt: Are You Sure You're Trying to Get Out of It?

clarissa
If you are in debt and you can't seem to get out of it, it may be that sometimes you forget about it. You don't realize that you have forgotten about your debt problem until it's too late, and you find yourself thinking whether you can afford a 2.00-cup of coffee.

If this is the case, then sure, you have a debt problem, but other problems make that problem worse. If you forget about your debt, you may have a denial problem, a procrastination problem, and a pleasure problem. Here is what all three of those problems look like.

The denial problem
You say to yourself. " I know I have debt, but it's only $10,000. Some people have $70,000 in credit card debt. I'm sure I could pay this down in a shorter time than they could. If they take ten years, for me it will only take three. What's the big deal?"

If you find yourself saying these words to yourself, you have to remember that you shouldn't compare yourself to other people. That is unwise. This is all about you and your debt. Ask yourself when you want to pay your credit card debt off. Base it on your own desires, and not anyone else's. If you have even two thousand in credit card debt, you have a problem so hurry up and fix it. The less time you take, the less money you will pay in interest.

The procrastination problem
The script for this problem sounds like this: " I know I should be putting an extra one hundred dollars on this bill, but I'm gonna pay the minimum one more time. I mean my APR is really low. It's only about 11%, and next week, surely, I will pay that extra bit to decrease my debt."

Sure you won't. That's what you should be saying. It's easy to pay the minimum. That's why the creditors have minimums, but in the long run, it's hard on your pockets. The thing about procrastination is that most of us don't know we are doing it, until we get really messed up. Then, we have to ask ourselves why we didn't plan. Why didn't we save? Why didn't we stop putting things off that we could have done earlier? It's too late now, for that one bill. But now, you are ahead of the game for next month. So start today.

The pleasure problem
You've owe $500.00 to Macys, and you noticed today that you don't own a pair of black shoes. You owe $300.00 to Capital one credit cards, but your car breaks down.

You figure that you can pay off 20.00 for shoes before 30 days, and no, this time you won't be able to put a dent in that $500.00. After all, you need some shoes.

But, you really don't need those shoes as badly as you think you do. What you need is to seriously get out of debt before you realize you are in over your head and you have a nervous break down. I know. You don't want to waste your life working three jobs and wearing run down shoes. Well, find a way to get money so you don't have to work three jobs. Do some freelance writing on the weekends. Sell something on ebay. Where there is a will, there is always a way.
