Debunking 3 More Common Myths About Tarot Cards

Lucy Myers
The general public, people who don't know much about Tarot, those who are afraid of the cards, and even some readers perpetuate many myths about the Tarot. Some of these myths are discussed in "Debunking 3 Common Myths About Tarot Cards," which you can read here:

But there are many more! These include the following myths about Tarot.

"You can't let anyone else touch your Tarot cards."

Letting others touch your cards won't effect your readings. Some people believe it will, because their energies are stored in the cards, and letting others touch them would contaminate the cards with energies that don't belong to the reader. Naturally, everyone has their own energies. But since this is the case, letting someone touch you transfers energy as well. If you don't believe letting someone touch you will contaminate you, then there's no reason to believe letting others touch your cards will contaminate them.

If you really are worried about energy contamination, that is, negative energies attaching themselves to your Tarot cards, you can use your own energy, salt, a crystal, or another cleansing method to clear them before you read.

"You need to be psychic to read the cards."

If this were true, there would be far fewer competent Tarot readers! You can learn to read the cards by practicing, reading for others, and doing your own readings. You can read using general meanings for the cards--meanings you learned from books that are readily available. You can also read intuitively, and anyone can develop his or her intuitive reading ability. Some people who are indeed psychic use the Tarot as a tool for more specific interpretation and answers to their clients' questions. But you don't need to be psychic in order to read the Tarot.

"You can't read for yourself."

If you can't read for yourself, how will you ever learn to read the Tarot? People won't come to you for readings unless you know you've had some experience. And the best way to get experience is to do regular readings for yourself--the person most readily available to you!

Reading for yourself can be difficult, however. Even people who have been reading Tarot for years still sometimes only see what they want to see in the cards. But you can overcome this by writing down the reading. This helps because when you read for yourself, you'll usually just sense a general meaning in the cards. So writing down the reading in sentences and with details gives you deeper insight and a more specific interpretation of the cards.

Reading for yourself will make you more familiar with how to read, what kind of questions to ask, card interpretations, your own intuition, and your own reading style. So don't give up! Doing personal readings is the best learning tool you have!

Tarot myths are sometimes hard to recognize. The most important things you can do are to know your own beliefs about Tarot, and to know where to turn for reliable information. Arm yourself with resources. Visit an experienced Tarot reader for training or just to talk. Surf to reputable online Tarot sites, including the Tarot 101 course at witchschool.com. And have fun learning to read the Tarot!
