Debunking 8 Popular Myths About Sex, Conception and Contraception

Timothy Sexton

Some of the myths and legends that have grown up around the concept of sex, conception and contraception are clearly ludicrous for those who have been engaging in intercourse for some time. Those of you who are younger, inexperienced and just starting out may still have some doubts and wonder about these odd myths that have grown into unsubstantiated facts over the years. If you were worried about getting pregnant or if you think you know a great way to avoid being pregnant, you might want to double check your facts against these 8 real facts.

8. You can't get pregnant the first time you have sex.

Well, technically, this sexual myth isn't a myth at all if you are a male. As for females, well, don't go getting excited about conception free sex your first time out. The fact is that you can most definitely wind up preggers after your first experience of unprotected sexual intercourse. Any guy who tells you different is just trying to get into your pants and may well be an idiot.

7. You can't get pregnant if he doesn't put it all the way in.

The "it' in this case is a penis. And a myth has grown around the concept that somehow not engaging in full penetration is enough to make sex fun without the attendant predicament of coming up pregnant. Don't believe it; you can get pregnant even if the penis doesn't fully penetrate. And you almost certainly will get pregnant eventually if you make this means of birth control a habit.

6. You can't get a woman pregnant if you have sex with her during her period.

Most virginal guys aren't going to let a little menstrual fluid stop their appointment with pleasure. That's fine and dandy, but don't go in all jacked up on the idea of risk free sex. While the chances of getting a woman pregnant when having sex during her period are much reduced, they aren't entirely absent.

5. Jumping up and down after sex is an effective means of birth control.

Say what! Okay, from a male perspective, watching your partner jumping up and down immediately after sex does have its positive aspects. Avoiding pregnancy is, unfortunately, not one of them. There is no physical exertion you can do in terms of simple exercises that assist in the process of birth control immediately after sex or any time thereafter.

4. If you can manage to pee after sex, you can avoid having a baby.

Ah, if only this contraception myth were true! Of course, if this contraception myth were true, the entire birth control industry from condoms to pills would collapse. Urinating after a man has ejaculated inside you may relieve some discomfort you feel, but it won't stop you from making a baby.

3. Douching is a very effective means of birth control.

No, it's not. In fact, douching can result in vaginal infection. But it can't stop conception from taking place.

2. Masturbation shortly before intercourse reduces sperm count and therefore the odds of conception.

Goodness knows, you've got more than enough reasons to masturbate. You can toss this reason aside, however. No matter how often you manage to ejaculate in the hours before intercourse, you won't reduce the number of sperm that are going to be headed toward the ovaries once you engage in intercourse.

1. Oral sex can result in conception.

No, it can't.
