December 2010 Movie New Releases

What Movies Are Coming Out in December of 2010?

Lisa Miller
December is always a great time for movie new releases. It's the time when the last of the Oscar hopefuls make their way into theaters, as well as the time when family-friendly holiday films make their appearance. December new releases are usually varied enough to provide entertainment for a range of tastes, and December 2010 looks like no exception.

So what movies are coming out in December 2010? Let's take a look:

December 2010 Movie New Releases: Friday, December 3rd

The Warrior's Way: Action films are generally scarce in December, but The Warrior's Way looks like it wants to make up for that by being as action-packed as possible.

Black Swan: The latest from director Darren Aronofsky centers on the competitive world of professional dance. Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis star in what should be a thoughtful thriller.

I Love You, Phillip Morris: This dark comedy/romance starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor has been around for seemingly forever, and is just now getting a theatrical release.

December 2010 Movie New Releases: Friday, December 10th

The Tourist: The Tourist has been getting a lot of hype mostly because of its two leads: Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. With that much star power, the plot is probably a secondary draw for most movie-goers.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader: The latest of the Chronicles of Narnia films, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader looks to be a definite draw for fans of the series.

The Fighter:Director David O. Russell is notoriously difficult to get along with, but luckily for us he almost uniformly makes interesting films. This drama starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale should be no exception.

The Tempest: Fans of Shakespeare will appreciate this big-screen retelling of the classic play. Helen Mirren stars as the gender-bending incarnation of Prospero.

December 2010 Movie New Releases: Friday, December 17th

TRON: Legacy:Sci-fi fans and fans of the original TRON are sure to be lining up to see this special-effects laden 3D film starring Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde.

Yogi Bear:Anna Faris, Justin Timberlake and Dan Aykroyd lend their voices to this CGI family film.

How Do You Know?: The romantic comedy How Do You Know? has a well-worn premise, but a great cast that includes Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon and Jack Nicholson.

And Soon the Darkness: Opening in limited release is this indie horror/thriller starring Star Trek's Karl Urban.

December 2010 Movie New Releases: Wednesday, December 22nd

True Grit: Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon star in this Coen Brothers remake of the Western classic. The marketing alone has piqued my interest, and early speculation has suggested that this film should be Oscar-worthy.

Little Fockers: Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro return to yet another Meet the Parents feature, the third of the series.

Gulliver's Travels:Among the most hyped movies of the holiday season is Jack Black's Gulliver's Travels. It should be interesting to see how the classic story is retold.

Country Strong: Gwyneth Paltrow has gotten a lot of buzz about her turn as a washed-up, alcoholic country star in Country Strong, not all of it positive. I have a feeling that the interesting casting might repel some viewers, though many might watch to see if she can actually pull the role off convincingly.

December 2010 Movie New Releases: Christmas Day

The Illusionist: No, this movie has nothing to do with the 2006 live-action film with Edward Norton and Jessica Biel. Instead it's an animated feature from the creator of The Triplets of Belleville. It looks like a charming way to spend Christmas for those who make a tradition of seeing films on the holiday.

December 2010 Movie New Releases: Friday, December 31st

Blue Valentine: This drama, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, is perhaps best known now for its currently-disputed NC-17 rating. Whether the rating gets bumped down to R remains to be seen, but early buzz from the film suggests that it's worth seeing regardless of how the MPAA rates it.

Bit of a skimpy December actually... usually there'd be more Oscar-bait coming out around now.
