December 21, 2012: Hoax or End of the World?

Pat Lunsford
According to a number of scientists, the end of the world will happen on December 21, 2012. Much of this is media hype but many other prophecies center on this dreaded date as well.

There is a planetary alignment developing in the universe that has the potential to cause worldwide chaos such as increasing earthquakes, volcanoes and rising sea levels. According to some scientists, the planets are lining up with the Milky Way and the closer we get to 2012 the more unstable our weather patterns could become.

There are a number of predictions such as a rogue planet (planet X) solar flares, and Electromagnetic pulse which could knock out the power grid, plunging us into the years before technology.

Google the date, December 21, 2012 and hundreds of web sites will come up. Some are trying to sell you their books on the subject. Some are religions offering advice and information. Many Christians believe it's the apocalypse. New age groups believe it's the age of enlightenment.

It is widely believed that worldwide governments are aware of this and have constructed huge underground shelters to which those appointed will go when it's time, leaving everyone else to fend for themselves.

It has been said that communities in South Africa are building underground shelters and that Canada is burying hundreds of buses, stocking them with food and water. People living near coastal regions and fault lines are relocating to the "safe zones" at higher altitudes. People are building underground shelters and storing food, water, guns and ammunition.

Many believe the power grid will go and violence is going to break out. Those near urban areas are getting away from the cities and people are arming themselves to protect their families. Whole communities are coming together and pooling resources.

Most of these predictions are probably exaggerated by those who are trying to make a quick buck. If everything happens that they say will happen, no one could survive no matter how well they prepare. Just one mega-volcano alone would block the sun worldwide and destroy all life on the planet.

Will the end of our world will come with an exhausted whimper? The Bible says the earth will react violently to the return of Jesus Christ. Once his foot touches the top of Mount Olive, the whole mountain will split in half.

A number of Christians believe we are living in the End Times and those of us who recognize the signs of the times are preparing for it. Jesus said we wouldn't know the exact time but we would recognize the season. We need to open our eyes and take a look at what's going on around the world. Remember the parable of the ten virgins?

Christ will rapture his church at some point around the time of the great tribulation (pre trib? mid trib? post trib?) and many of those who confess him as Lord during this period will be martyred while those who take the mark of the beast will be acknowledging the beast as Lord and thereby denying Christ.

When the true Christians are taken away this world will fall into total chaos and no one in their right mind would want to be here. It will be so bad that some will beg for death but it won't come.

We have known this was coming for more than 2,000 years so there will be no excuses. However, if Christ hasn't returned by the time this is being read, there is still time to be saved. Jesus Christ is the ONLY safe place and those who belong to him will escape the things that are are surely coming upon the whole world.

"Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matt. 11:29-30)
