Deciding on a Pet Companion

What Pet is Right for You?

Matthew Schieltz
Animals all across the world symbolize different things and ideals-- from loving pets all the way up to honorable and respectable mammals. In certain religions, cows are much respected and they are never killed. On the other hand, cats are eaten in some cultures and countries. In the United States, however, animals are loved beyond belief and the ones that we choose to domesticate are loved the most. Cats and dogs are definitely the two animals that are the most loved out of all the others. Some may have multiple dogs and multiple cats at the same time or one may have that one special pet that they feel they are very attached to. Of course, it is saddening when the day comes that we have to bury our pets, but until that day does come, we love our pets with all of our hearts. Isn't that right, pet lovers?

Deciding on which animal to have as your pet can be a difficult thing to do. It most likely isn't difficult because one has a hard time trying to find an animal that they could get attached to, but for the reason that there are so many animals and domesticated pets in the world to choose from. From animal shelters and humane societies to no-kill pet houses, there are many animals all across the United States that need to find a loving home!

Factors When Deciding on a Pet

There are several things that you should keep in mind when trying to figure out which type of animal is right for you. The very first thing is your preferences. The obvious would be to decide whether or nor you are a dog or a cat lover and to go with that instinct. If you do love dogs and cats, chances are that you'll be able to find a loving cat or dog around your area and it will not be difficult for you at all to be able to choose one that'll be suitable for you.

If you're not thinking about choosing a cat or a dog, however, many other factors might influence what type of pet that you buy. For example, do you want to have little to no cleanup when it's time to take care of your pet? If you're busy and can't find the necessary time to spend cuddling with your pet, choosing something that would require very little care seems like it would be the best bet. On the other hand, if you want a smaller pet that would require less care than a dog or a cat, yet don't want anything too small, there are options for you there also.

What Are Some Pet Options?

For a busy type of lifestyle like one that was described above, getting a tankful of colorful fish or even hamsters might be good types of animals for you. Fish and hamsters don't require all that much care that you can't quickly do in the evenings or on the weekends, and you'll have the company that you want. Furthermore, there are several types of fish and hamsters to choose from that there will be no shortage of choices available when you decide that this is the type of pet that you want.

There is also the option of getting guinea pigs, rabbits, or even a large bird or two. These animals are larger than those listed above, so you need not worry about feeling like you don't even have a pet to contend with. Guinea pigs and rabbits make excellent companions for those who like taking their pets out for a stroke every once in awhile! They are excellent for the young, middle-aged, and the elderly!

Cats and dogs are the other obvious choices when it comes to choosing a pet, but they are also a couple of the pets that require the most care. Even though dogs require more care than cats, both these mammals require lots of attention and love for you to live with them. If you get them for a pet and then abandon them, they do become very lonely. Another factor is how often you will be home for your pet. When it comes to dogs, they need to be walked at least once, if not twice, per day. Cats, on the other hand, may not need to be walked, but they still require attention from their owners as much as possible. These two animals, cats and dogs, are excellent pets for anyone who lives alone and desires a loving companion. Your cat or dog can be your best friend in the worst of times and they will cheer you up whenever you're down. Don't you want a pet like that?

There are many pets to choose from and there are even more that weren't listed here. The most important thing to remember when choosing a life-long pet is exactly that. This pet will be with your for the rest of your, or their, life-- so making the most of it and choosing a pet that's not only suited for you, but also one that you'll be able to spend a lot of your time with, makes a big difference between a loving companion and a lonely pet.
