Starting a business is a life-changing moment and event as starting a business requires time, dedication, effort, hard work, patience and much more.

Deciding to start a business is a big step, but do you know what type of business you want to run, how you will make money, how you will start the business, where it will be based and so on...the answer is probably not, but fear not this is perfectly normal!

Below are a few tips, suggestions and ideas as to how you can go about planning and starting your very own business.

1. Start jotting down some ideas - By ideas I mean business ideas. Decide what type of business you would like to start.

2. Start conducting some market research to find out what type of business is needed in and around your area/target market.

3. Start working out your finances, If you need a business loan, grant or similar to get you started then it is best to start putting together both your personal and business finances as soon as you have settles on a business idea. Work out how much money you will need, what the money will be used for, repayment of the money/finance and so on.

4. Start putting together a business plan. Once you have decided on a business idea, now is the right time to start planning for your business and putting together a business plan which should include information and market research on areas such as your business, your business idea, your business location, your target markets/audiences, your competitors and competition, both direct and indirect, your financial information for the business such as profit and loss accounts, cash flow forecasts budgets and much more. A business plan should take time and is not something that should be rushed, as preparation and planning are key to any successful business.

5. Seek out some professional and impartial advice. Speak to local business advisors, banks, accountants and anyone else you might find useful. Find out as much information as you can from these sources on more, on areas and topics such as how you go about starting a business, registering a business, legally forming a company, researching your market and so on. Remember that the more help, advice and guidance you get early on the less you will need once your business is up and running.

6. Visit your local library and source out books such as Starting and running a business for dummies, starting a new business, and so on, these books will help you plan and get on track for starting a business.
