Deciding to Take the Institute of Children's Literature Aptitude Test

Here I Am About 11 Years Later

Viktorya Hale
About 11 years or so, I received an envelope that looked to be just another piece of junk mail. Intrigued, I went ahead and opened it. I found this interesting letter with a test to see if I would make a good children's book writer. I didn't put much to mind about it until a couple years ago.

I had remembered that deep down there was a passion for writing. I loved children and I loved writing, even then. I just never put forth any effort, up until almost 3 years ago. Well, here I am about 11 years later, with the same letter in hand, contemplating.

I have finally found a place in my heart for the infamous J.K. Rowling, because her daughter and she were on public assistance in an unheated apartment, when her inspiration began to take form. This was in 1990 when she started creating the Harry Potter character. It wasn't until years later that she began writing these ideas on paper, well paper napkins. Now look where she is. Although I still don't agree with her perception of what a child fantasy should be, I admire her efforts as a young mother looking to better herself.

Another thing that drew me to this institute is the fact that there is so much inspiration and to gain and others to learn from. As a writer, I feel that there is never too much to learn. Even Kristi Holl, being a mother and while her baby was napping, decided to write a story. She took this same aptitude test and has published 40 books and 150 stories and articles, just because she allowed her imagination to soar. She is now a teacher at the Institute of Children's Literature.

So what does this test do?

It enables you (and the institute) to discover potential. It shows you and professional readers at the institute to see whether or not you would make a good children's book writer. You must qualify to be a student. From there, you will be tested, complete a character study, a descriptive sketch, five story or article manuscripts, the opening chapters of a book as well as professional query letters to editors.

This is an awesome first step process for any children's book writer. It doesn't say that you are a poor writer, but using this school gives you a boost in your writing career and gives them accountability for you so that you can publish your books. We can't really learn too much can we?

Taking the Institute of Children's Literature Aptitude Test will open many doors for you and help you along the way. Please visit the link provided to learn more. Good luck!!

I'll check it out...Like Sheryl, I'm wary of these, but if I get solid recommendations from 'real people', I will certainly take a look! Thanks.

Hey, this course was recommended by a fellow writer who took the same course. Thanks for looking out for me though :) Thanks you all!

Be careful - I'm not sure about this one, but these kinds of places will take tuition money from anyone that thinks they can write. We KNOW you can write, but just a warning!
