Deciding Whether Massage Therapy is the Right Career for You

Part 1: Consider Your Motivations, Passion

Lyssa Rose
Deciding whether to become a massage therapist involves both research and a true desire to work in the profession. It seems easy to make that decision based on passion alone, but I can advise you through personal experience that there are several things to consider before running off to your nearest massage school and signing up.

For many years, after having been a receiver of deep tissue massages, I decided that I wanted to become a massage therapist. I was passionate and still am passionate about the healing power of massage therapy. I truly gave this a lot of thought over the years and then one day found myself signing up for school. I was sure that this was the right move for me.

In order to help you decide whether becoming a massage therapist is right for YOU, this article is only the first of many articles I will be writing. This particular article is to only get you thinking about your own motivations and passion. It's best to start at the ground floor level of your thought process before actually pursuing a career in Massage Therapy. It's not always good to over analyze or over think things, but at least ask yourself the following questions:

Do you want to become a massage therapist to help other people?

Do you want to become a Massage Therapist because you have heard about all the money that can be made?

Maybe like me, the lure is a combination of both. But is that enough? There is a lot more involved in getting to both the "helping people" part of the equation and even more involved in getting to the "money making" part of the equation.

The flashy ads on the television and the internet and even the flashy talk of a school recruiter can get a person really excited about a career in massage therapy before they can really stop and think about all of the realities of their decision.

However, sometimes you don't know what you don't know. This is why I'm doing this article series. I'm not out to discourage people, but instead I want to help guide people into making the right choice for themselves.

Don't just take my word for it though. This article series is based on my own personal experience and you should do as much research on your own. Signing up for massage school and the student loans that go along with it is not to be taken lightly no matter how excited you are to get started.

Stay tuned for more.
