Deciding Whether to Have Your Pet Euthanized

Rhonda Jones
It is perhaps the single most difficult decision any pet owner will ever have to make. Deciding if and when to have your pet put to sleep can cause as much stress and even despair as making the same decision for a human loved one. In order to minimize the pain when such a decision arises, it is best for you to have a plan before there is an accident, or before your pet becomes elderly and begins to have health problems. It may be difficult to think about when your pet is young and healthy, but change is inevitable, and you will be glad in the future that you have a plan.

Here are the things you should consider.

In case of accident. One of the things you will have to decide is what to do in case of accident. Two types of accidents a pet may suffer are poisoning and being hit by a car. In many cases, a pet will survive poisoning and get back to normal with proper treatment. Being hit by a car can result in permanent damage by costing a pet a limb or creating internal damage. Many pets live long and happy lives after losing one or more limbs. However, some injuries can leave a pet in pain for the rest of their lives.

In case of illness. What if your pet gets cancer or needs surgery for some other reason? It is perfectly reasonable to consider your ability to pay for your pet's treatment - including pain medication - when making your decision. At this stage, it would be wise for you to do a little research on the types of illnesses your pet may get in the future and plan accordingly.

The aging process. As your pet ages, his or her body will undergo many changes. He may develop arthritis or become forgetful. Incontinence may also be a problem. Learn about the aging process for your particular animal and decide ahead of time what you have the resources to deal with and what you think your pet will be able to cope with as well. If you own a large dog, for example, how will you deal with the situation if he develops arthritis and can no longer go up and down the front steps to use the bathroom?

Quality of life. The most important thing to consider when determining the best course of action is whether your pet still seems to be enjoying his or her life to some extent. If he is still eating, still shows pleasure at your approach or plays with his favorite toys, or even just enjoys lying there while you pet him, then that likely means he is still enjoying himself. If your pet seems to be in constant agony, however, then it may mean it is time for some relief.

Whatever you decide, don't forget to take care of yourself as well. Don't give in to the temptation to feel guilty. We all wish we could provide our loved ones with perfect lives, but that is beyond most people's abilities. Know that you have done the best you can for your pet, and enjoy the wonderful memories he or she has given you.
