Deciding Which Car Insurance Company is Right for You

Melina Ann Collison
With today's economy car insurance seems more of a luxury than a necessity. Even though it is required to carry car insurance in most areas people are just not able to pay the bill. The decision to buy food for your family or car insurance is an ever growing concern for many American families in today's society. We as mothers, fathers, grandparents, and family members cannot stand by while this happens. We need to educate ourselves on what to look for in a car insurance company so we do not pay for added extras that cannot be afforded.

Where do we go when we need car insurance? To the phone book is where. This is our first big NO. Talk to your friends, family, and co-workers about where they have car insurance. You want a company that will be there for you when you need them. Someone who looks out for the guy who just got rear ended. Picking up a phone book will not give you that information. Word of mouth is your best bet in situations like this.

Get multiple quotes. This does not include car insurance companies that give you the rates of others as well as there own rate. Go out and find the information on your own. You will be surprised at how much of a difference you get when you go to the company and ask rather than relying on other places to tell you rates. The car insurance company is always cheaper when you call the actual place or look online at the website.

Read your ordinances and laws regarding car insurance and make sure the company you choose will help you meet these needs. Worst thing is you can get car insurance and still not have what you need to keep yourself from getting a ticket.

Do you have a car loan? Most individuals need full coverage insurance if they still owe money on the car. This provides extra coverage for if you are in an accident and have big repair and/or medical bills. If the company or bank your loan is through requires full coverage insurance then you need to make sure the car insurance company you choose will help you meet this requirement.

Tickets, accidents, and other traffic violations can make insurance rates go higher and higher. If this is one of your problems then choose a car insurance company that works with you for not having traffic violations. Some companies offer lower rates at a significantly faster pace, if you do not get violations, than you would normally get if you waited the time for each ticket to drop off individually. This can reduce your monthly payments faster.

Know your driving record. How many of us have gone to get insurance, forgot about that one ticket, and then gotten a letter in the mail saying we owe more per month because they found a blemish on our record? We all have had this happen to us or someone we know. Hidden costs and fees will not make us happy. Surprises in our fees are something we want to avoid. So get a print out of your driving record before you go shopping for car insurance.

No broker fees. No one wants to pay someone $30 for them to give you car insurance. Go with a company that does not have any hidden fees. Have the insurance broker go over your bill so you know if you're paying for him to talk to you or just your state taxes.
