Deciding Which Laser Printer is Best for Your Office

What Do I Need to Consider?

Erik Van Tongerloo
Many years ago a laser printer was an expensive purchase and only great companies could afford to buy a laser printer. Nowadays almost every company has at least one in their office. Selecting the best one for your office is difficult choice because almost every month new laser printers of the most popular brands appear on the market.

The prices of laser printers dropped very much and even a color laser printer is not expensive anymore. Making the right choice for your office depends on several factors and it is important to consider about all the important needs for your office and if it is worthwhile to spend more for only small differences.

Some important questions are:

- Which resolution do you need?
- Is the speed important and do you want to spend more for a higher speed?
- Is it necessary to print in color?
- What is your budget?
- Do you use your printer in a network?
- How many people will use this printer?
- Which size of paper do you use: do you use only A4 format or is it also necessary to print on A3 format?
- How many pages do you use daily?
- Is the intern memory of your printer important?
- Is the cost of the cartridges not too high?
- Do you need more than one paper tray?

The brand of your laser printer is always important. Several brands can give good results but if you read the reviews of the most recent printers; HP can be considered as the number one concerning the quality of your print out.
Selecting the best one for every office is impossible. The possibilities of every printer and the price which you pay for all these extras are too high to pick just one or a few for making the right choice. The only thing that can be said is that the prices will decrease almost every month and also new possibilities are added.

Hp laserjet printers in the 1020 series are good laser printers for offices which only need to print in black and white and don't work in a network environment. The speed is between 12 and 19 ppm dependent on which type you choose. The Hp 1022 is the fastest one with a speed of 19 ppm and a resolution of 1200X1200 dpi.

If you want to use your printer in a network you can best consider buying a hp laser printer in the 2000 series. The speed is much higher (27 ppm); the print quality is the same compared with the 1020 series but these are more suitable for a higher volume of pages you need to print in one month (on average 15.000 pages). These kind of printers have also two paper trays; the most expensive one even three.

Companies who need often to print on A3 format have to make another choice. They might consider buying the Hp laserjet 5200; this printer has the same print quality as the previous ones but the speed is much higher (35ppm) and is really heavy. This printer has 2 paper trays and you can use one tray for A3 paper.

Also color laser printers are not so expensive anymore. The hp color laserjet 1600 and 2600 are two models for quality printing in color. The last one can be used in a network and the speed for color printing is 8ppm and 16 ppm. The resolution for color printing is 600X600 dpi and gives a good result. For printing pictures I shouldn't advice you these one because the resolution is not so high than these of inkjet printers or photo printers. Another disadvantage of these printers is also that they need 4 cartridges and you can't print when one color is empty. You can't even print in black and white when your other cartridges are empty.

Deciding which laser printer is best for your office requires a lot of research. Don't buy one with all the possibilities you never use and it is best to choose one which is easy to use and a good result of your printing. Don't spend too much money for the printer you buy because almost every month comes a new model on the market on a lower price and you can better replace your old one than buying a very expensive one. The expensive models are only useful for great companies with many users and even then it is not always necessary to buy the most expensive models

Make the decision for your office according to the needs and try to find a solution to print on the cheapest way. Why buying a color laser printer if you only print a few pages in color?

Compare the prices and possibilities and make the right choice! You will save a lot of money.

I hate printers that don't print b/w when the color cartridge is empty!
