1) Centered recessed step lighting.
This my favorite way to make an impression. These are small, almost flat lights that you can install in the center of each step. These will give you increased visibility and security. Now for the good part, THEY LOOK AMAZING! The are very simple to install. A novice can do it. Most brands come with a 5 year warranty and are very weather durable. They also tend to be more on the affordable side for those who are lighting up their deck on a budget.
2) Railing Lights.
If you want your deck to look really cool (and also be on the functional side) railing lights are your next step. These help guide your guests hands as they climb steps in the dark of night. If you have elderly guests or children, this can give a great deal of piece of mind. They also give your deck a very mod look. You can get the up and down lighting version for even more visibility if desired.
3) Deck Post Lighting.
If it is a dressed up look you are going for, go for post lighting. These are applied as toppers. They are "little houses" for your lighting. The nicest thing about this type of decor is the design options. You may purchase these in zen, nautical, country cottage, and traditional designs. You may also special order these in all kinds of more rare motifs. These also usually include warranties. Make sure that you do opt for water resistant models.
4) Mountable finished outdoor lanterns.
If you would like to add more light in a certain area, these are a great choice. They are easily mountable with clamps and brackets to ensure that they are safely installed. Modern lanterns are versatile because they will attach virtually any place you wish to use them. They are a mood setter, and cast a glow comparable to candlelight.
5) In ground well lights.
Here you have it. If you are desiring to bring out the big guns, you have arrived. Well lights are the lights of light makers and designers. They look "built in" and offer an amazing effect when combined with my other lighting love, the recessed step light. Guests will ask if you build decks for a living. You will need to resist the urge to say yes. Also, they are durable, and come in many different finishes. You can match the size of you lights to your wishes and smirk as people ooh and ahhh.
6) Directional Spotlights.
These will at least get an honorable mention on my list of deck favorites. They do provide function and added security. The best part is that the latest finishes of the spotlight has in fact, taken out some of the ugliness. If you do not need to light up a field, they do also come in mini variety.
Happy hunting with your deck lighting needs. If you are a deck enthusiast such as myself, add these ideas to your list. Throw in a few Tim the tool man grunts, and enjoy yourself.
