Decline in Illegal Immigration

With the dismal state of the American economy, many Americans themselves are thinking of moving to other countries because of the lack of jobs. Well, it has hurt illegal immigrants even more.

A study by the Pew Hispanic Center has shown that the number of Mexican's entering the United States illegally through the border has dropped nearly 40 percent in 2009. It has also found that almost 500,000 immigrants already in the country have chosen to go back to Mexico because of the drought in the job market.

The study's findings are based on border-apprehension numbers, and U.S. and Mexican population figures.

  • 2006, more than a million Mexicans tried to enter the U.S. over a 12-month period.
  • Now with the USA and global economy suffering, by 2008 that number had dropped to about 630,000 and even more intriguing, an estimated 433,000 heading back to Mexico during that same period of time.

Experts have said this drop is mainly caused by the limited jobs still available in the states.

Rodolfo de la Garza, a professor at Columbia University says even though Mexican immigrants are having trouble finding jobs "Things are worse in Mexico than they are here." He goes on to say that while jobs are limited in the states, they are still much more financially rewarding than the ones still available in Mexico.

It is ironic that all these years, many had wished that illegal immigration would decline, it has declined, but only in a troublesome situation for all.
