De-clutter Your Home

But I Need That! Maybe... Well, Someday I Might.

Rebecca Serotko
There comes a time (even for people who are extremely organized) to go through and unclutter the house. We never really mean for the towering mess of magazines, clothing to be repaired, doubles of things, etc to get out of hand, but it happens and it affects us all greatly. The emotional and health problems from having too many things can do more harm than good. People who have too much clutter in their homes tend to have problems like obesity, depression and fatigue to name a few. Even if you feel like you do not have that much clutter, I encourage you to really look around your house and ask yourself if there are things in it that you don't really care for. These things take up space that could be used to put something you will love in its place or better yet, you could just enjoy the fact that you have less to clean! Remember... Less Clutter = Less to Clean = More Time for You!!!

De-cluttering doesn't have to be a one day thing. You can do it a room at a time or even just take ten minutes a day to gather things. Most of the time, once you start you can't stop! Now I know it can be hard to part with things, but just ask yourself these questions.

1. Does it make me feel good to look/at it or have it?
2. Does it serve a purpose?
3. Have I used it or worn it in a year?
4. Can I get another if I need to later?

Now that you have these questions to ask yourself and a plan (whether it be a room a day or ten minutes a day), time to get to work! If you are able, take the items that are no longer wanted immediately to your local donation center that way you aren't tempted to go back into the box to get them. It is also a good idea from now on to keep a tote specifically designated for things that you no longer want. I think once you get in the habit of getting rid of clutter you will enjoy throwing things in it. But again, make sure you empty it repeatedly. Make it a weekly habit like recycling! This is really not a hard thing to do and the benefits of getting rid of clutter are endless. I think you will start to see good things happen and opportunities open up! Now what are you waiting for?
