Decoding Dairy Queen: How Can a Guitar Sound like a Dolphin?

Bridget Ilene Delaney

If you watch the Dairy Queen commercials, they have a campaign that says things are "reDQlous," playing on the word "ridiculous." One of the things that is said is that the man doesn't just play a guitar, he plays a guitar that sounds like a dolphin.

This brings to mind the question, "Can a guitar sound like a dolphin?"

In the commercial, recording of dolphin sounds are being played while the man strokes the guitar. Any guitar sounds are taken out during editing and the dolphin sounds are put into the commercial.

Yet, this still does not answer "Can a guitar sound like a dolphin?"

The guitar in the commercial is an acoustic guitar. Acoustic guitars sound like guitars, not like dolphins.

However, if you play an electric guitar, you might be able to get it to sound like a dolphin.

A trick to get the electric guitar to sound like a dolphin is to connect your wah peddle the opposite way that it should be connected (put your input into the amp socket).

Use your foot to push your wah-wah pedal up and down. You might be able to get a dolphin-like sound from your electric guitar.

There are other sounds that can be made with an electric guitar, too. Some of these are important to rock n' roll musicians.

There are sounds like "chainsaw," "feedback," "bell chime," and "violin."

ViJay gives examples of these on his website.

So, can you play a guitar that sounds like a dolphin? You can if you play an electric guitar.

    Right you are... An accomplished guitar player can use the instrument, especially an electric one, as kind of synthesizer and mimic many natural (and unnatural) sounds :-}
