Decorate for a Harry Potter Potions Class Halloween Party

Tonya Hillukka

Don't just throw a Harry Potter Halloween party -- turn it into a Potions class bash. Decorate your house like a Hogwarts classroom, play magical and potions related games, and serve Potter-inspired food to your guests. Looking for some fun ways to decorate for a Harry Potter potions class Halloween party?

Begin with the basics: balloons, streamers and potions class signs. Do you favor a certain Hogwarts House? Decorate your classroom with the following colors, depending on your preferred House:

~Gryffindor: red and gold
~Slytherin: green and silver
~Hufflepuff: yellow and black
~Ravenclaw: blue and bronze

Make a sign that says 'Potions Class' and hang it outside your 'classroom' or outside the front door of your house. Dress it up with balloons and streamers in your chosen colors. Make additional signs for the 'Ingredients' and other areas of the room.

Don't have a blackboard? Make your own with a large sheet of black tagboard and a silver permanent marker. Write the days lessons on your 'blackboard', frame it and hang it at the front of the classroom. You can also make your own Potions books by covering any large book with paper and decorating it as you like.

Decorate with apothecary jars filled with mystical ingredients. You can use any clear jar; you will often find them at thrift and antique stores. They don't all necessarily have to be the same. Label each jar with its ingredients:

~bezoars (dried fruit pits)
~Doxy eggs (white or yellow candy sprinkles)
~armadillo bile (honey)
~unicorn blood (silver craft glue)
~bubotubers (yellow gummy candies)
~fairy dust (colored glitter)
~jobberknoll feathers (craft feathers)
~peppermint leaves

The list can go on to include asphodel, bicorn parts, fluxweed, horned slugs and so on. Use your imagination and the ingredients in your kitchen to come up with a plethora of potions ingredients for your potions class Halloween party.

Decorate for the party with food. For example, if you are planning on making soup for the party, serve it in a cauldron . Or, let guests make their own ice cream sundaes with chocolate syrup (dragon blood), caramel (bubotuber pus), nuts (nettles), candy sprinkles (Doxy eggs) and any other favorite potion ingredients. Cover the table in a black cloth and label each of the ingredients. Fill in empty spaces with party favors such as licorice wands, Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans and so on.

Finally, ask your party guests to dress up as Hogwarts students, or as their favorite Harry Potter character, to complete the Halloween Potions class atmosphere.
