Decorate Your Home with a Denim Star Wreath

Recycle Blue Jeans into a Western Decoration

Cyndee Kromminga
Recycle your old blue jeans into a denim star wreath for Americana, country, rustic or western decorating. Hang the wreath on a door, wall, chair or any place that needs that added finishing touch. A great idea for a kid's cowboy room. I wish I had thought of this when my big cowboys were little buckaroos.

I used two pairs of old blue jeans and a wire clothes hanger. Needless to say, this project was a freebie. Even the added ties were bits of miscellaneous I had in my craft stash.

This project does require holes to be punched through the denim. I used a tool called a Crop-A-Dile. It is a fabulous tool, but if you don't have one, I am sure a tiny slit made with a seam ripper would work just as well.

Things You Will Need:

Wire clothes hanger
Needle nose pliers
Wire cutters
Tape measure
Adult blue jeans, two pair
Scissors
Crop-A-Dile
Bandanna
Twine

Step 1
Untwist the wire around the neck of a wire clothes hanger using needle nose pliers. Straighten the twist of the wire, the hanger's hook and the shoulder bends until the wire is one long length. Measure and cut the wire to 46 inches using wire cutters.

Step 2
Bend a 1/2-inch hook on one end using needle nose pliers. Measure 4 1/2 inches from the bend of the hook and bend the wire downward at a 45 degree angle. Measure 4 1/2 inches more and bend the wire upward at a 45 degree angle. Continue to measure every 4 1/2 inches, bending the wire upward and downward to create a zigzag. Do not bend the remaining 1/2 inch at this time. Set the wire aside.

Step 3
Cut off the legs, just below the pockets, from two pairs of blue jeans. Cut off the hems and open one side seam of each leg.

Step 4
Rip 1 1/2-inch wide strips the length of the jean legs. I lost track of how many strips I used, but four jean legs (two pair) was more than enough.

Step 5
Center and punch a hole every 3 inches along the length of each strip. I measured the space between the first couple of holes and then eye-balled it from there.

Step 6
Thread the strips onto the wire. Insert the straight end of the wire through the first hole on a strip, from the back to the front. Insert in the second hole from the front to the back. The process is similar to hand sewing a running stitch. Continue along the entire length of the strip. Slide the threaded strip to the end of the wire and bunch it up at the end. I twisted the bunched strips so the folds were not lined up. Add additional strips in the same way until the wire has been filled.

Step 7
Bend the last 1/2 inch of the wire into a hook. Bring the two hooked ends together and connect. Squeeze the hooked openings closed. The wreath will form into a star. Adjust the bends if necessary.

Step 8
Cut three, 36-inch lengths of twine. Rip a 1/2-inch wide strip from a bandanna. Cut the strip to 18 inches long. Bundle the twine lengths together and hold in the center. Add the bandanna strip to the bundle and hold all of it in the center. Determine the top point of your star. Wrap the bundle around the point and tie the center into a knot.
