Decorate with Wineglasses This Valentine's Day

Lisa Riggs
There is great beauty to be found in wineglasses. The gorgeous shapes, delicate stems and lovely etching patterns make this glassware a wonderful base for holiday decorating. Whether you are planning a romantic dinner for two, or are hosting a fun and festive party or brunch with loved ones, use that overstock of wineglasses in your cabinet to create unique Valentine's Day decorations.

Fill with Candy Hearts. Several boxes of novelty candy hearts can be purchased for only a dollar or two in the days leading up to the holiday. Arrange two or three wineglasses in the center of your holiday table and fill to the brim with these sweet treats. Arrange the candy pieces so that the sentimental messages can be viewed from all sides of the glass. Encourage your sweetheart or holiday guests to indulge in the candy for dessert.

Float Candles in the Glasses. Purchase a box of small candles that are appropriate for displaying in water. Fill the wineglasses halfway with tap water and then place a candle in each one. The more pieces you use, the more dramatic the decor piece will be. Laying the glassware on a mirror will create a stunning holiday display that will add a gorgeous effect to your Valentine's Day table.

Fill the Wineglasses Halfway with Flower Petals. A beautiful glass filled to the middle point with fragrant flower petals creates a very romantic holiday decor piece. Purchase several individual roses before Valentine's Day and carefully pluck the petals from the stems. Lay them in an assortment of glasses and arrange the pieces on a fireplace mantel or coffee table. A large bag of artificial petals from an arts and crafts store will cost less than five dollars and will offer enough material to create a nice sized centerpiece.

Create a Windowsill Decoration. Fill your favorite glasses with ordinary tap water. Add several drops of red food dye to the water. Use a spoon to mix the dye and continue adding drops until the desired color is achieved. Line up the wineglasses on a windowsill that catches a nice amount of sunshine during the day. The sun's rays bouncing off the colored water will fill the room with a cheery atmosphere. A length of ribbon can be tied around the bases to give the decorations a little more splash.

Make Place Settings. Put those mismatched wineglasses to good use this Valentine's Day. Gather enough pieces so that each holiday guest will have their own unique place setting. Print each person's name on a piece of white card stock with a fine tip magic marker. Fill each glass with cinnamon discs, peppermint candies, wooden heart cutouts or red confetti. Place each one at a spot at the table and lean the pieces of card stock against the corresponding glass. Using a variety of fillers will add to the party's festivity and create an eclectic feel to the table decor.
