Decorating Away the Winter Blahs

A. Hermitt
When spring is so close you can smell it, but there's still snow on the ground and frost in the air, it is sure to give you the winter blahs. Fortunately, a bit of decorating can chase away those gloomy feelings.

The first thing you should consider in decorating away those winter blahs is paint. Have you been staring at the same paint colors for several years? A new paint color in a bright color would be sure to brighten up your mood. If you are happy with the wall color you have, consider putting up a brightly colored pair of curtains, or purchase a few throw blankets for your sofas. A new way to brighten up a wall without committing to seasonal paint colors is to apply three-dimensional adhesives. They come in all shapes and sizes from a flock of three-inch birds or dragonflies, to large geometric shapes. You can use these to make a feature wall without pulling out the paint roller.

Add fun area rugs to your room to chase away the winter blahs. Choose a bright color or a bold pattern. You can put down throw rugs to give your floors extra warmth. You can put down an area rug on top of a wall-to-wall carpet. You can even hang an elaborate area rug like a tapestry. These area rugs can be cleaned and put in storage during the summer, and brought back out next winter.

Pillows and throw blankets are an extremely easy and relatively inexpensive way to add vibrant colors to your room. You can be bold and choose brilliant colors you were always afraid to paint on the wall. You might find out after introducing a new color to a room in the form of a pillow, that you are drawn to go ahead and paint the whole room that color.

Lighting is very important in chasing away the winter blahs. Cleaning your windows will remove a dirty film you didn't even know was there and increase the light level of the room. Add additional light through lamps at eye level instead of using overhead lights.

Purchase fresh flowers to chase away the winter blahs. It can cost as little as $10.00 a week to keep a bouquet on your coffee table or mantle, and it will remind you that spring is coming fast. That, and the wonderful aroma of cut flowers is sure to elevate your mood.
